2.2 MANUFACTURED ITEMS

2.2.1 Load Pins and Compression Load Cells

2.2.1.1 General

a. Load pins and compression load cells shall be designed to operate in an inland freshwater marine environment, exposed to the atmosphere but not submerged. Operation will be in close proximity to heavy electromechanical equipment and ship to shore radio equipment. An EMI/RF physical barrier with at least 8 transient voltage suppressors will be built in to limit signal interference. The load pins and compression load cells sensing elements will be full bridge 350 ohm strain gages. The bridge wiring will be 4 wire and it will be configured for single axis loading. Redundant bridges, signal conditioners, outputs with shunt calibration capability will be built into the load pins and compression load cells as a backup against malfunction. Dual connectors will be provided with protective covers and permanently identified consistent with the dual calibrations.

b. A minimum rated fatigue life of 300,000 cycles at 99.9% reliability is required. The supplier will provide detailed outline drawings of the load pins and calculations to verify that the static and cyclic requirements have been met. The static design is required to provide for a 150% overload without calibration shift and 300% without failure.

The load pin material will preferably be 17-4 PH stainless steel, Condition 1150 except as noted below with tensile strength not exceeding 140 ksi and 105 ksi min yield strength. Other materials will be accepted providing they meet all of the other structural requirements stated here in.

c. The compression load cell material will preferably be ANSI 4340, quenched and tempered alloy steel with tensile strength not exceeding 140 ksi and 100 ksi min yield strength. Other materials will be accepted providing they meet all of the other structural requirements stated here in.

d. The load pins/compression load cells will be calibrated while supported as shown on the drawings. Calibration will be in accordance with ASTM E74 for the full range of loads shown on the drawings and stated herein.

e. Load pins are to be permanently identified with the direction of the sensitive load axis and mark numbers as shown. These markings shall preferably be on the top end of the load pins unless noted otherwise.

f. The head section of each load pin will include a threaded hole for a 5/8-inch diameter eye bolt for the purpose of removing the load pins.

g. The load pin head section is to be integral with the load pin body.

Welding of load pin head to load pin body is only with submission of weld detail and calculations and permission of the Contracting Officer.

h. Size and location of external grooves and internal borings for placement of instrumentation inside of load pins and compression load cells is at discretion of the manufacturer but must be reflected in the structural calculations.

i. Surface finish bearing surfaces of load pins and compression load cells to 63 µ in average.

j. Only one known load point for calibrating the load pins and compression load cells is available and so the supplier is required to provide shunt calibration with the load pins and compression load cells. The shunt calibrations should be set at 70-80% of the full load scale. A calibration sheet shall be provided for each bridge of each load cell.

k. The signal conditioners provided in each load pin and compression load cell will be 2 conductor loop powered 24 volt 4-20mA output with two additional conductors for the shunt calibration.

l. Static error band +/- 1% of full scale output including nonlinearity, non-repeatability, and hysteresis based on best fit line.

m. Zero Balance +/- 2% of full scale maximum.

n. Operating Temperature: -30 to +130 °F.

o. Temperature effects unless noted otherwise.

Zero Shift: less than 0.01% of capacity per °F Sensitivity shift: Less than 0.01% of capacity per °F

p. Electrical Connection. Supplier shall specify connector type and pin outputs. Cables are to be 5 wire shielded conductor cable. Cable connectors will be compatible with the load cells at one end and Brad Harrison Stainless Steel part No. BH 8R4006A18A120 in order to match existing readout equipment. Pin 1 = +24VDC, Pin 2 = +Shuntcal, Pin 3 = -shuntcal, Pin 4 = + signal

2.2.2 Load Pin

a. Design and calibrate Anchor Frame A load pin for loading of 251 kips tension and 110 kips compression.

b. With Anchor Frame A load pin under compression load as shown on drawing, calibrate for approximately 4ma output at 110 kip load.

c. Design and calibrate Anchor Frame B load pin for loading of 161 kips tension and 123 kips compression.

d. With Anchor Frame B load pin under compression load as shown on drawing, calibrate for approximately 4ma output at 123 kip tension load.

e. Permanently inscribe tension (positive) load scribe oriented as shown on top end of load pin.

f. Load Pins must be oriented with load scribe as shown in field.

g. Provide one 35-foot long connecting cable with each load pin.

2.2.3 Compression Load Cell Assembly

a. Compression load cell assemblies are to be installed in line with the anchor bars and placed in between the anchor bar nut and the anchor frame. Overall height of the assembly including load washers will not exceed 5-1/2-inches and the diameter shall be approximately 8 inches.

b. Compression load cells, matching base plate and load washers are to be manufactured and provided as an assembly by the compression load cell manufacturer. The compression load cell and base plate will be bolted together for load testing and calibration as an assembly.

c. In conjunction with compression load cell calibration, the manufacturer will specify the temperature load shift if any to be applied.

d. Two physically identical compression load cell assemblies are required capable of supporting a one time 312 kip anchor bar pull test load but with different calibration requirements as specified below.

e. The required calibration range for the Anchor Frame A compression load cell is from 10 kips to 239 kips. The anchor bar will be initially post tensioned to 211 kips but due to the effects of concrete growth in the lock wall, the load will gradually increase to 239 kips over a period of several years.

f. The required calibration range for the Anchor Frame B compression load cell is from 10 kips to 145 kips. The anchor bar will be initially post-tensioned to 128 kips but due to the effects of concrete growth in the lock wall, the load will gradually increase to 145 kips over a period of several years.

g. Provide one 35-foot long connector cable for each compression load cell.
