About this file
This is a Questions and Answers document clarifying equipment specifications and requirements for a Radial Internal Clearance (Radial Play) Measurement Machine procurement.
The document addresses two primary inquiries. First, it clarifies that the equipment accuracy/uncertainty specification of "5 + 0.5L microinches or better" contains a typographical error and should read "50 + 0.5 microinches or better," with the requirement effectively calling for a dial indicator measuring in increments of 0.00005 inches. The variable "L" in the original specification represents a standard measurement uncertainty formula component accounting for increased uncertainty as measurement distance increases. Second, the response addresses part print availability, clarifying that individual drawings cannot be provided for the tens to hundreds of bearings involved in the procurement. Instead, the government references legacy equipment specifications, noting that an approximately 6-inch-wide arbor is sufficient to accommodate bearing width, with the critical dimension being a minimum inner diameter of 5 inches (approximately 125 millimeters) to establish arbor diameters. The response includes a photograph of the legacy equipment performing radial play measurements to serve as a reference for contractors developing proposals.

Question 1:
A. question regarding the equipment specification of accuracy/uncertainty
It is stated that the accuracy/uncertainty of the equipment is 5 + 0.5L microinches or better. We looked through the document and the list of standards, and we were unable to find what the variable L is. We are looking for clarification on this.
Answer:
A. It is just a variable for length. Usually with measurements, it's an equipment uncertainty base value plus a variable of length that adds onto the uncertainty as the measurement distance gets longer.
Question:
B.
Answer:
B. There is a typo on the base uncertainty and instead it should say 50 + 0.5 microinches or better, thus we are really looking for a dial indicator that measures in increments of 0.00005". Which is likely a better way to state the requirement anyway...
Question 2:
Is there any way any part prints can be provided? If not, could we get a bit more information regarding the size of the parts? Specifically, the range of the parts’ width?
Answer:
This is for tens to hundreds of bearings, so it is not really feasible to provide every part dwg.
Additionally, the bearing should sit on an arbor so bearing width shouldn't be too much of an issue. Below is a picture of the legacy equipment that is performing the radial play measurement. If the arbor is approximately 6" wide to accommodate the bearing being fully secured then that should suffice. The important dimension is that the minimum ID of 5" (appx. 125 mm) to set the diameters of the arbors.
