About this file
This is a Questions and Answers document from a federal contract solicitation regarding the procurement of precision measurement equipment for bearing testing.
The government's primary requirement is a dial indicator or equivalent device capable of measuring in 0.00005" increments (1.27 µm), representing an improvement over the existing manual machine that only measures 0.0001" increments. A contractor proposed a semi-automatic gauge with probes offering accuracy below 0.1 µm, 0.01 µm resolution, and 0.05 µm repeatability, along with enhanced features including data logging, part tracking, operator influence elimination, and force monitoring. The government confirmed that while these improvements would be beneficial, they are not mandatory. The Statement of Work explicitly permits either manual or automatic machine operation. The government emphasized that meeting the base accuracy requirement within budget constraints is the critical success factor, and the semi-automatic gauging improvements are categorized as nice-to-have enhancements rather than essential specifications.

Question:
Thank you for answering those questions. I have reviewed the solicitation and the information you provided, and I want to make sure I am on track with your intended deliverable. Are you looking for a direct replacement for this machine? The machine you currently use looks like a manual operation. We are looking at providing you with a semi-automatic gauge, which would
• Eliminate operator influence on readings,
• Be able to log data,
• Provide more accurate readings,
• Allow for part tracking,
• Monitor the force applied to the bearing to achieve the reading.
The probes we would use have an accuracy as low as <0.1 μm, up to 0.01 μm resolution, and 0.05 μm repeatability.
This machine would enhance your testing process, allowing for more accurate and reliable readings and traceability for your bearings. Is this something that you are looking for? Let me know what you think.
Answer:
We are not looking for a direct replacement/carbon copy of the existing machine, but we are looking for a machine that covers the same capability at a minimum. As stated before, we are looking for a dial indicator or equivalent that can measure 0.00005” increments. The existing dial indicator only measures 0.0001” increments, so we are looking for an improvement when it comes to accuracy. The 0.00005” requirement is equivalent to 1.27 µm, so the probes they are discussing would meet and exceed the need. This increased level of accuracy and repeatability along with the semi-automatic gauging improvements listed above would be nice to have but are not necessarily mandatory. In the SOW we had it listed that it is acceptable for the machine operation to be either manual or automatic.
The important thing is we meet our base requirement within budget.
