C.5.4..1.2 Materials shall be properly selected for the stresses to which they will be subjected. Load carrying parts, except girders shall be designed so that the calculated static stress in the material, based on rated load, shall not exceed 20 percent of the published average ultimate strength of the material. This limitation of stress provides a margin of strength to allow for variations in the properties of materials and under no condition should imply authorization or protection for user to load the crane beyond capacity. Girders shall be designed in accordance with applicable codes.

C5.4.2. Bridge Structural:

C.5.4.2.1 All structural steel used should conform to ASTM-A36 specifications or shall be an accepted type for the purpose of which the steel is to be used and for the operations to be performed on it. Other suitable materials may be used provided that the parts are proportioned to comparable design factors.

C.5.4.2.2 Where track system cross building expansion joints, provisions shall be made to accommodate for differential expansion of building and track. Expansion compensated for by appropriate hangar rod swing is one possible provision.

C5.4.3 End trucks and Drives:

C.5.4.3.1 End trucks shall have fully equalizing carries with anti-friction wheel and wheel bearing. The end trucks shall be provided with rubber bumpers at each end to engage stops on the crane runway.

C.5.4.3.2 The bridge shall be driven by means of one electric motor drive equipped with a crane duty, 30-minute totally enclosed non-ventilated motor, self lubricating gear case running in an oil bath, A.C. disc brake, and a span reduction adherent, grease lubricated through hydraulic fittings. The bridge shall have a variable frequency drive for multi-speed function.

C5.4.4 Bridge Wheels:

C.5.4.4.1 Wheels shall be carried on sealed, permanently lubricated, antifriction bearings designed for axial and thrust loading. Bearings shall conform to the applicable requirements of the ABMA 9 or ABMA 11. Bearings shall have an L-10 life of 3,000 hours or more, as defined by ABMA 9or ABMA 11 as applicable.

C5.4.5 Hoists and Trolley:

C.5.4.5.1 Crane supplier shall furnish as part of the contract a chain hoist of the type most suitable for the particular application under consideration. Such hoist shall comply with the appropriate standard listed within this specification. As specified in ASME B30.16

C.5.4.5.2 Hoist and trolleys shall be designed to withstand all stresses imposed under safe operation conditions while handling loads within the rated capacity. Load bearing parts shall be designed such that the static stress, calculated for rated load, shall not exceed 20% of the ultimate strength of the material. As specified in ASME B30.16

C.5.4.5.3 Hoists are to be furnished complete with a suitable pushbutton. Pushbutton arrangement is to be supplied with strain relief protection. Control actuators shall be dead-man type with speed adjustment of multi-speed control obtainable by progressive depression of the pushbutton elements to increase motor lift speed and spring return to off position. As specified in ASME B30.16

C.5.4.5.4 Trolley traverse drive - Two wheels are driven; one on each side of the frame for maximum traction and uniform tracking. Traverse motor drives a right angle worm gear reducer for smooth starting and stopping (within O.S.H.A. required distances) without requiring a brake. Trolley traverse drive pinion shaft is hex-sided; keys not needed for reducer or pinion connections. Each drive pinion is held in place with locking collars to prevent pinion walking. The trolley shall have a variable frequency drive for multispeed function. As specified in ASME B30.16

C.5.4.5.5 Hooks: The hook shall be of the safety type with hook nuts keyed to hook shanks by means of a setscrew installed in a plane parallel to the longitudinal axis of the hook shank, or by any other similar easily removable securing device. All hook components shall be magnetic-particle inspected over the entire area in accordance with applicable codes. The acceptance standard shall be one of no defects. A defect is defined as a linear indication revealed by magnetic-particle inspection that is greater than 1/8 inch long whose length is equal to or is greater than three times its width. As specified in ASME B30.16

C.5.4.5.6 Hoist Chain: The hoist chain shall be made up of grade 80 nickel plated load chain. Hoists shall be equipped with a load chain bucket/bag/container. As specified in ASME B30.16

C.5.4.5.7 Five Pocket Load Sheave- Increases chain and sheave engagement 25% over hoists with conventional four-pocket sheaves. Provides smoother lifting and reduces chain wear over four-pocket sheaves. As specified in

ASME B30.16

C5.4.6 Controls:
