About this file
This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) file related to nondestructive testing (NDE) for a Wire Arc Additive Manufactured (WAAM) Parts solicitation. The Q&A provides technical clarification on welding and testing specifications, specifically addressing two key points: (1) NDE will only be required for manually welded components or splices, with x-ray imaging for defects per AWS D.1.5 standards, and (2) ASME BPVC SEC IX article VI governs material manufacturing using wire-additive welding. The document indicates that the particular component should be capable of being manufactured without manual welding/splicing, and therefore would not require AWS D1.5 and AWS D20.1 standards. The responses aim to provide precise guidance on the applicable welding and testing procedures for the proposed manufacturing process.

The following questions and answers are provided for informational purposes only:
Question #1: Our engineering department is requesting clarification on the nondestructive testing. Can you please specify the required techniques and the procedural specification and acceptance specification for each technique?
Answer #1: NDE will only be required for manually welded components or splices. If the component is manually welded, the component will be subjected to x-ray imaging for defects according to AWS D.1.5.
Question #2: To further elaborate on the request, the SOW mentions both AWS D1.5 and AWS D20.1 for acceptance criteria. We would like clarification on what procedure and acceptance criteria are being applied and to what process step (i.e. is the reference to AWS D1.5 only application if the component is spliced?)?
Answer #2: ASME BPVC SEC IX article VI 'Material Manufacturing Using Wire-Additive Welding’ governs. AWS D1.5 and AWS D20.1 are only if the component needs to be manually spliced/welded. This particular component should be capable of being manufactured without a manual weld/splice and therefore would not need AWS D1.5 and AWS D20.1.
