About this file
This document describes the requirements for a universal testing machine to be procured by the Department of the Army Corps of Engineers Engineer Research and Development Center. The Center requires a benchtop single or double column load frame rated to 1.1kN capable of testing plant root samples as small as 10mm in length. The machine must include a servo actuator with 110V single phase power, a load cell rated up to 440N for tension and compression, an electronic displacement measurement system with 0.1 micron resolution, integrated controls and data acquisition at 2000Hz. Fatigue testing and cyclic loading software is required along with mechanical screw action grips and interchangeable jaw options for round and pyramid shaped samples from 2-10mm in diameter. Delivery and installation is required within 3 months of award at the specified location in Vicksburg, MS along with one year of warranty, maintenance, training and software licensing. The related federal contract opportunity is solicitation number W912HZ23Q7452 for this universal testing machine from the Department of the Army Corps of Engineers Engineer Research and Development Center.

Description of Requirement
Centrifuge Research Complex Universal Testing Machine
1. INTRODUCTION:
The Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Geotechnical and Structures Lab (GSL) requires a universal testing machine to support ongoing research in the Centrifuge Research Complex (CRC) and at the Synthetic Environment for Near-Surface Sensing and Experimentation (SENSE) lab. A universal testing machine, like those manufactured by Test Resources, will be used to determine the tensile strength of a single plant root with diameters starting at 2 mm and lengths as short as 10 cm.
Qty Part Description
All Electric Dynamic Testing Machine
Single column load frame rated to 1.1 kN and all associated hardware and basic software.
1 Fatigue testing software
Provides cyclic testing including cycles to pass, cycles to failure, and cycles impending failure
1 Grips Mechanical Screw Action Grips
1 Pyramid Jaws Serrated Jaws which fit inside mechanical screw action grip
1 V-Jaws V-jaws for round samples which fit inside mechanical screw action grip
1 Shipping Packaging and shipping of all components to ERDC.
1 Installation and Training Installation and training of personnel.
2. UNIVERSAL TESTING MACHINE MAIN HARDWARE:
• A single or double, vertical, benchtop column load frame rated to 1.1N. The load frame must support minimum sample lengths of 10mm up to at least 30mm (although more length would be acceptable.)
• Control of load frame will be via an electric servo actuator with a max speed of 105 mm/s and a stroke of 50mm. The actuator must work with 110V single phase. The machine must be capable of static, cyclic, and fatigue testing.
• The servo actuator should have a high speed closed loop servo control and PID tuning.
• High accuracy load cell rated up to 440N. Rated for both tension and compression.
• Electronic displacement measurement with a resolution of at least 0.1 micron.
• Integrated hardware controls and electronics with multi-channel data acquisition system (2000 Hz acquisition rate) with automatic recognition of instruments.
• System should be capable of expansion to more advanced grips, fixtures, and accessories as needed in the future.
3. SOFTWARE:
• Windows based modular software platform which can be easily enhanced at any time by adding standard capabilities and features. Software package should conduct most common materials characterization static tests at a constant position control mode, displacement rate, load rate or strain rate. Data analysis should include real time display of measurements and data plots, automatically generated test reports and typical calculations derived from the load-strain-deflection measurements in English and SI units.
• Include fatigue testing package which provides cyclic testing including cycles to pass, cycles to failure, and cycles impending failure. Function Generator for Ramp, Sine, Pulse, and Triangle waveforms able to be configured and customized for different test profiles which can be saved.
4. GRIP OPTIONS
• Include mechanical screw action grips with two different jaw options a pyramid jaw and v-jaws for round sample with a diameter of 2-10 mm.
5. DELIVERY DATE AND LOCATION:
• Quote shall include system integration, shipping, installation, 1-year warranty/maintenance period, software licensing, and training required to ensure the equipment is fully functional. Training shall take place at ERDC, address listed below.
• Equipment shall be delivered and installed no later than 3 months after award. Training and installation shall be provided within 60 days after delivery.
• Attn: TBD Engineer Research and Development Center Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory 3909 Halls Ferry Road Vicksburg MS, 39180
