About this file
This document is an itinerary for an Operational Restoration Center (ORC) Site Tour at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, scheduled for March 5, 2026. The tour begins at 10:00 AM at the OPS Conference Room in Building 250 and covers 17 stops across the installation and surrounding off-base properties. Tour participants are instructed to direct all questions through ProjNet and avoid sidebar conversations with the Remedial Project Manager (RPM) or Shaw Support Staff. Photography of planes and airfield is prohibited, and airfield training is required for certain stops, though no escort is necessary.
The tour encompasses multiple Areas of Concern (AOCs) and Solid Waste Management Units (SWMUs) with various contaminant plumes including chlorinated solvents, fuels, TCE, dieldrin, and PFAS. Key sites include treatment systems (two Groundwater Treatment Plants using bag filters, GAC units, and ion exchange resin), extraction and injection wells, and both active and inactive remediation trailers. Notable stops include AOC F (former dry cleaner), AOC H (fuel and TCE source areas), multiple landfills with varying levels of groundwater sampling activity, and off-base properties such as Sans Souci Farm and Mr. Burkett's property. Several remediation systems have been shut down as of October 2024, and ongoing activities include COCAG injections, monitoring well sampling, and deed restriction discussions with off-base property owners. The tour concludes with a return to Shaw AFB Visitors Center.

ORC SITE TOUR – 5 March 2026
SHAW AFB, SC – ORC Site Tour 5 March 2026
START OF TOUR/CE BUILDING
10:00 meet at OPS Conference Room in Building 250, 428 Chapin Street.
Discuss ground rules, all questions through projnet, no side bar conversations with RPM or Shaw Support Staff.
Stop #0 – AOC W; unpaved parking for recreational vehicles; Expanded RFI (Human Health Risk Assessment) recommends NFA/Site Closure
No COCs about RGs, have requested site closure
Stop #1 – Parking lot north of Aiken St and Chapin St. AOC D is to the east (chlorinated solvents). SWMU 78 (Dieldrin Plume) west towards installation boundary and WWTP. Top of groundwater divide. Outcrop of Orangeburg escarpment near Monitoring Well 087A.
Use to have ozone and/or perezone trailor here.
Origin of offsite plume, RPM showed map of offsite properties that received annual notification letters with summary of sampling results, also request if they want a deed restriction in case property is sold.
Stop #2 – Parking lot off Aiken St. and south of Polifka Drive. AOC O (chlorinated solvents) to the east. Escarpment is down the hill. Can observe control panel of AOC F extraction well
2BEX-07.
Old ozone Trailor here at this site could be operational, now owned by Baywest, also have used permanganate. Most recently injected COCAG in 2024.
Stop #3 – Parking lot northwest corner of Houston Ave./Lance Ave. North side of SWMU 2 (POL Yard) and source of AOC F (former dry cleaner).
Used perozone and ozone at AOC F, Plume goes southeast, then drops to lower aquifer and goes northwest.
Trailor was removed, but vaults and lines in place.
Extraction wells take this groundwater to GWTP 1.
Stop #4 (Drive By and turn around) – Patrol Rd.- South Side of SWMU 2 - Black hole/groundwater sink where free product continues to accumulate. Wells are ~150 yards off Patrol Rd.
Don’t take any pics of planes or airfield.
Access will have to be coordinated with Airfield manager May be old JP4 plume Will need airfield training, but no escort.
Stop #5 – Parking Lot area north of fire station – southeast intersection of Killian Av and Nelson Ave - AOC H - fuel and TCE source areas. ISCO system for source areas and distal ozone system (shutdown). Overlook to SWMU 98/B1200 (DLA Site) towards apron/airfield (Air injection shutdown Oct 2024) In the past did isco injections for fuels.
Have two ozone trailers here, both turned off, vertical injection wells.
98 is in the Duplin aquifer.
Stop #6 – Parking lot off Shaw Dr. and Aero Way, south of Hangar B.1614. “Trifecta” of sites.
AOC M (fuels), SWMU 96 (TCE) to south and SWMU 87 (tank site/fuels) south and overlapping with SWMU 96 out to wash bay.
Used to be an AOC L, but was merged into AOC H, Current contractor doing COCAG injections while we were there, Having some daylighting of material and some refusal at 37 ft bgs. Need 3 years of groundwater results below RGs to request site closeout.
Stop #7 – west side of Shaw Dr. (tank location) SWMU 99 (DLA Site) air compressor trailer (shutdown Oct 2024.) . SWMU 99 extends toward the North Apron (covered F-16 parking) Can also observe AOC N extraction well NEX-04.
Oxzone trailer turned off, have horizontal injection wells here under taxiway.
AOC N plume starts at runway and goes northeast across the golf course.
Stop #8 (drive by) – head north along Patrol Rd, right side of road just north of SWMU52/LF-09 /fuel truck parking lot.
Will be driving by 3 landfills, the first one is only landfill with active gw sampling, rest all have only LUCS.
Stop #9 (drive by) – continue north/northeast on Patrol Rd. about 150 yards to security gate leading up to LF-08. Note crossing over headwater of north ditch/Long Branch Creek.
Stop #10 (drive by) – continue east/southeast on Patrol Rd. – pull over at AOC N – shallow source area/ note fenced area north of the road is LF-03.
Stop #11 – enter parking lot on north side of Patrol Rd at Rockeye Rd. Observe SWMU 59 and SWMU 101 and FT001P-SUB (FTA#1). Longbranch creek off into the woods forms east side of base.
SWMU 59 is old TCE plume, Swmu is old landfill, FTA#1 is PFOS There are injections and extraction trenches here that cross all 3 sites, groundwater goes to GWTP 2 and is treated and returned.
Some old injection wells and tubing left in ground from old treatment trailer at SWMU 59.
Have done a site investigation for SWMI 101 to identify COCs.
Stop #12 – Groundwater Treatment Plant #2, Dirt Boys/FT007P (FTA#2) and EOD Area/FT006P (FTA#3). Groundwater Treatment for FTA#1/FTA#2/FTA#3 PFAS source areas.
Uses a treatment train of bag filters, GAC units and ix resin, no breakthrough to date. Have to change out the bags a lot for the bag filters. Nitrogen blanket used in EQ tank to keep metals from falling out. SCADA unit is located in rented office trailer because of the EOD area.
Stop #13 – Groundwater Treatment Plant #1 (Off-Base Annex) – Hwy 441/Avocet Dr - AOC F/H/N groundwater treatment – Extraction well 2BEX-08 and INJ17.
Also, a treatment train using bag filters, GAC units, and ix resin systems. IDW can be processed here if it doesn’t contain pesticides. The lead and lag tanks were swapped in the processing due to the ix resin change out in the former lead tank When operating at full capacity, aquifer cannot accept all the groundwater back in the formation in a timely manner so have NPDES permit to discharge to stream after pH adjustment.
Stop #14 (drive by) – Leave annex, turn right, and continue west from Hwy 441 to Beech Creek Rd. - private properties - MW29 at end of Beech Creek Rd to west. Brown property to north with furthest-west extraction wells (2BEX-14/15) for AOC F.
Stop #15 (drive by) – Turn south on to Horne Rd, slowing to note current extent of shallow dieldrin, SWMU 78. Spring over edge of road; about 75 feet below street surface.
Stop #16 (drive by) – turn south on Holy Lane Rd, noting this is private road to lead to Mr.
Burkett’s home - monthly GAC sampling and O&M.
Turn left off onto Hwy 441 then left onto Edgehill Rd – shout-out to BW-4 on the right and this is current known extent of AOC N TCE plume.
Stop #17 (drive by) - Continue west on Edgehill Rd. – stop outside Sans Souci Farm gate. Note this is the currently known extent of AOC F plume. Installed BOS100 tech demo study on this property. Highly sensitive landowner/property manager.
END OF TOUR – RETURN TO SHAW AFB VISITORS CENTER.
