1.3 EQUIPMENT

Provide size, type, and manufacturer of paver and rollers to be used and a list of other equipment to be used for the seal coat operation.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 BITUMINOUS MIXTURES

1. SPWEA240E Wearing Course Mixture

2. SPNWB230E Non-Wearing Course Mixture

2.2 BITUMINOUS MATERIAL

Per the specified mix design.

2.3 AGGREGATE

Per the specified mix design.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 PREPARATION OF THE UNDERLYING SURFACE

For aggregate surfaces; shape and grade to meet existing drainage grade.

Compact surface with a minimum of 2 passes using a roller weighing not less than 5 ton or a using a plate compactor whichever is appropriate for the size of paving.

For bituminous surfaces; immediately before placing the hot mix bituminous, clean the underlying course of dust and debris. Apply a tack coat in accordance with the contract specifications.

3.2 PLACEMENT

Place bituminous mixture in accordance to MNDOT 2360, except as modified below.

3.3 COMPACTION OF MIXTURE

After placing, the mixture shall be thoroughly and uniformly compacted by rolling. Compact the surface as soon as possible without causing displacement, cracking or shoving. The sequence of rolling operations and the type of rollers used shall be at the discretion of the Contractor. The speed of the roller shall, at all times, be sufficiently slow to avoid displacement of the hot mixture and be effective in compaction. Any displacement occurring as a result of reversing the direction of the roller, or from any other cause, shall be corrected at once. Furnish sufficient rollers to handle the output of the plant.

Continue rolling until the surface is of uniform texture, true to grade and cross section, and there is no further visual evidence of consolidation. A minimum of 3 passes are required.

SECTION 32 12 16.01 Page 3 W912ES18B0015

To prevent adhesion of the mixture to the roller, keep the wheels properly moistened but excessive water will not be permitted. In areas not accessible to the roller, the mixture shall be thoroughly compacted with hand tampers.

3.4 Tolerance

After compaction, the thickness of each lift shall be within a tolerance of 1/4 inch.

3.5 QUALITY CONTROL

Submit a Plant Certification stating that the plant producing the bituminous mixture is certified by a State Department of Transportation.

Submit a signed Delivered Material Certification stating that each type of material delivered to each site met the requirements found in this specification. This certification shall also include the dates of delivery and quantities delivered to each site.

Perform testing as indicated in paragraph TESTING.

3.6 TESTING

The following tests shall be performed by and at the expense of the Contractor. Copies of test results with verification that the results meet the mix design shall be submitted to the Contracting Officer.

Take one sample per day of paving and perform the following tests.

Bituminous Content by the extraction method in accordance with

ASTM D2172/D2172M.

Sieve Analysis in accordance with ASTM C117 and ASTM C136/C136M.

Take and record temperature of each load of mix once the truck is backed up to the paver. Loads not meeting the temperature required by the specified mix design shall not be placed.
