SUMMARY OF CHANGES

SECTION SF 30 - BLOCK 14 CONTINUATION PAGE

The following have been added by full text:

AMENDMENT 0003

Question: Please clarify required specific gravity of rip rap. Spec section 35 31 19.00 13 paragraph 2.2.1 specifies the specific gravity of stone to be 2.6. However on the gradation curve 2.65 and 2.7 are shown. Also will additional sources be considered if the rock meets the required specific gravity? Sources that were on the approved list that are available to produce the stone are 100 + miles from site.

Answer: Response regarding specific gravity inquiry: The specification requires a specific gravity (Gs) not less than 2.6. The plots provided as a reference of what the gradation is for an average (or expected value) of Gs of 2.65.

The gradations change based on the specific gravity. However, the change is minor for a Gs between 2.6 and 2.7, which is why an average plot with Gs = 2.65 is provided. The two riprap gradation plots should have, however, stated that the specific gravity is 2.65. This has been corrected in the amendment.

Response regarding stone sources: As stated in the specifications, the Contractor is free to propose alternative sources. However, based on flow conditions at this site, it was decided that allowable riprap sources would be restricted to those with igneous or metamorphic rock such as listed in the approved material sources. Amendment 1 opened up the approved material sources for bedding to include limestone quarries. No additional sources were provided for the riprap. Paragraph 2.1 has been rewritten to clarify these requirements.

The following paragraph has been revised to clarify what materials are acceptable to be used for riprap and for bedding. The attached file shows the two riprap gradations with the identified specific gravity of the plot changed to

2.65 to match the plots.

2.1 STONE SOURCES AND EVALUATION

Stone materials shall be quarried rock produced from the approved material sources listed in the attachments at the end of this section. The second page of approved material sources pertains to sources that are approved only for bedding material. Riprap shall be composed of igneous or metamorphic stone. In addition to igneous or metamorphic stone, bedding may be composed of limestone. If the Contractor proposes to furnish materials from a source not listed, the Government Geologist will make such investigations and evaluations as necessary to determine whether or not materials with acceptable durability can be produced from the proposed source. The rock supplied shall be produced from one rock formation to provide a product of uniform appearance. The Contractor shall not supply rock from various formations, unless approved by the Contracting Officer. The Contractor shall not mix field-stone with quarried rock. It is the Contractor's responsibility to determine that the stone source or combination of sources selected is capable of providing the quality, quantities and gradation needed and at the rate needed to maintain the scheduled progress of the work.
