1.3 DEFINITIONS
1.3.1 Acceptance Sections
Fill placement acceptance sections are defined as the portion of the renourished beach lying between two immediately adjacent pay profile lines.
The Contractor shall propose acceptance section designations to the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) prior to the start of the Government pre-fill surveys for review and approval. Typical beach fill acceptance sections are measured between 500 and 1000 feet along the CBL.
This may differ depending on fill densities along the fill profile.
1.3.2 Compensating Slopes
The allowance for pay volume above the fill tolerance to compensate for vacancies within the fill template due to sediment relocated by natural forces between the time of placement and payment surveys.
1.3.3 Construction Baseline (CBL)
To closely resemble the shoreline, a Construction Baseline (CBL) was established. The CBL determines the seaward/gulfward berm crest width and the construction stationing for pre- and post-payment surveys.
SECTION 35 20 25 Page 4
1.3.4 Maximum Excavation Depth
The maximum dredge depth is shown on the plans for each borrow area. The Contractor can not remove material below this depth.
1.3.5 Target Depth
Depth within the designated borrow area limits to which the Contractor shall excavate before being permitted by the Contracting Officer to proceed to another subdivision within that borrow area, or relocate to another borrow area.
1.3.6 Hardbottom
See Section 01 57 20 ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION.

3.3 EXCAVATION
3.3.1 General
All excavation for beach fill shall be performed within the limits and depths of each borrow area shown on the drawings. Borrow areas provided for each fill segment are permitted for that particular beach fill segment and cannot be used interchangeable between project fill segments. Existing conditions of the borrow area are represented on the hydrographic survey and core boring logs in the Geotechnical Data Report (See Section 01 11 00 SUMMARY OF WORK). Excavation shall be performed in a uniform and continuous manner so as to avoid creating multiple holes, valleys, or ridges. If continuous reaches of rock are encountered in the borrow area, the Contractor shall change the location and depth of excavation within the borrow limits when necessary to provide the best fill material available at no additional cost to the Government. The Contractor shall remove no material deeper than the maximum elevation shown on the plans for each area of the borrow area. The Contractor's dredge equipment may extend and disturb material below the maximum excavation depth, provided that the post construction survey of the borrow area does not show that material was removed below the maximum excavation depth. The location of unsuitable material encountered within the borrow area shall be noted on the Contractor's Quality Control Report (copy appended to the end of Section 01 45 05 DREDGING/BEACH FILL PLACEMENT - CONTRACTOR QUALITY CONTROL). If the Contracting Officer determines the quality of beach fill is being adversely affected, that location shall be avoided in future passes of the dredge.
3.3.2 Borrow Area Characteristics
The characteristics of the materials in the borrow areas may be as generally indicated by the sediment boring logs and grain size distribution curves area located in Section 00 31 32 GEOTECHNICAL DATA REPORT (GDR).
The descriptions of the material found within the GDR are based on the site investigations and core borings and only describe the materials obtained from those investigations. The Contractor is solely responsible for any interpretation or conclusions drawn therefrom. The Contractor may visit
SECTION 35 20 25 Page 18 the location to view the core samples prior to the start of construction.
The Contractor shall provide a five (5) day notice to the Contracting Officer or their represent agent of their requested visit. The material found in each of the borrow area sediment core borings (vibracores) is indicative only of the sand at that discrete location. The CONTRACTOR should be aware that it is possible for material of differing characteristics to be present in the borrow areas, including material differing from that contained in the vibracores.
3.3.3 Borrow Area Dredging
The borrow area and each subdivision, unless otherwise directed by the Contracting Officer shall be completely excavated to the target depth before relocating the dredge to another borrow area or subdivision.
Excavation shall be performed in a uniform and continuous manner so as to avoid creating multiple holes, valleys, or ridges. The borrow area shall be dredged to maximize the removal of sand from each sub-area of each provided borrow area. The purpose of this requirement is to avoid "wasting" sediment which could be used to renourish the beach now and in the future.
3.3.4 Overflow Dredging
Overflow is considered a part of the dredging process and is permitted…
