GEOTECHNICAL DATA REPORT
1 SCOPE
The information provided in this section encompasses the geotechnical field investigations available for this project. The investigations consist of borings. The associated boring logs and laboratory data are presented in paragraphs 4.6 and 4.7, respectively. A character of materials paragraph is included to provide a comprehensive description of the materials utilizing both recent and historical knowledge of the project area. Also included in this section are definitions of terms and boring log notes, which provide additional explanation of the boring logs and drilling techniques.
Items discussed in the character of materials paragraph may not appear explicitly on the boring logs. Based on historic knowledge of the project area, the character of materials paragraph includes items that supplement the data documented by the boring logs. When reviewing the boring logs, use all of the data on the logs, including the materials description, legend, and blow counts. When evaluating the subsurface conditions, use all of the data, including the character of materials paragraph and boring logs.
During the solicitation period, any questions that pertain to the information provided in this section should be addressed to the contract specialist identified in Block 9 of SF1442. After contract award, questions should be addressed to the appointed ACO/COR, which will coordinate with Geotechnical Branch.
2 CHARACTER OF MATERIALS
2.1 THE LOCAL GEOLOGY
Canaveral Harbor is located on the east coast of Florida. It is a man-made harbor that has restricted hydrodynamic flow due to the presence of the Canaveral Lock and Dam at its riverine inlet from the west. As a result, settling of fine silts/clays is the primary source of sedimentation in the harbor basin areas. Tidal influence, cross-shore, and longshore sediment transport are the primary sources of shoal material that occur in the channel cuts.
2.2 MATERIALS ENCOUNTERED
The areas characterized herein have been excavated during previous recurrent dredging events.
Therefore, materials shown within the design depth on the boring logs and surficial sediment sample gradations have been removed by previous dredging. New materials deposited at these locations are expected to be similar to the previously characterized materials within the harbor.
Elevations of the newly deposited materials are shown on the channel survey. Within the harbor, a non-cohesive layer of clay and silt is commonly found, and is held in suspension at the bottom of the channels and basins. This layer varies in thickness and becomes denser with depth. Areas of denser, compacted, in-situ sediments, likely the remnants of incomplete removal of dredged material during the most recent deepening, are also present at or near the bottom of the dredge prism.
Materials expected to be encountered include primarily fine sand, silty sand, silt with sand, clay, and shell. Debris from marine activities may a lso be present in the channel and along loading docks, i.e., tires, ropes, cables, cement blocks, boulders, pilings, etc. Plates 1 – 4 include site plan and core boring, vibracore, and sediment sample locations.
Canaveral Harbor Maintenance Dredging
2.2.1 Channel Cut 1
The materials in Channel Cut 1 are shoal deposits that have formed since the areas were last dredged. Historically, these shoals have consisted primarily of sandy silts (ML and/or MH) and clays (CL and/or CH), with occasional thin layers of silty or clayey, fine grained, poorly graded quartz sand (SM and SC, respectively) and trace amounts of whole and broken shell.
2.2.2 Channel Cut 2, Widener, and Sediment Trap
The materials to be excavated in Cut 2 (up to the Trident Access Channel), the Widener, and Sediment Trap Area are shoal deposits that have formed since the areas were last dredged.
Historically, these shoals have consisted of silt (ML and/or MH), clay (CL and/or CH), poorly-graded fine quartz sand (SP), and silty sand (SM) with trace amounts of shell. In the most recent dredging activities, denser, fine grained, poorly graded quartz sand (SP) was a primary constituent of the shoaled material.
2.2.3 Trident Access Channel
The materials within the Trident Access Channel historically have consisted primarily of soft to firm silts (MH and/or ML), sandy silts (MH and/or ML), clays (CH and/or CL), shell, and fine to medium grained, poorly-graded silty, quartz sand (SM). Gravel and cobble size rock fragments left from previous dredging events are also expected to be found in this area.
3 DEFINITIONS
Definitions not explicitly indicated in the sections below are typical industry standard definitions from their respective ASTMs.
3.1 DEFINITIONS OF BASIC TERMS
Carbonate – Soil component that reacts with HCl of an indeterminate origin (shell, rock, etc.).
Fill – Material that has been placed by man, described with all soil characteristics.
Layer – Rock or soil with a thickness of 6 inches or less.
Lens – A geologic deposit of variable thickness, which disappears laterally in all directions and cannot be correlated to adjacent borings.
Rock – A naturally occurring substance composed of one or more minerals bound together. This geologic term includes a range of engineering properties: strength, hardness, permeability, weathering, and discontinuity. These properties are noted or can be inferred from the boring logs as blow counts, penetration rate, RQD, hardness, etc.
Shell – Material composed of predominantly (>75%) coarse-grained sand to gravel-sized whole or broken shell.
3.2 CURRENT LOGGING TERMS
Definition of terms used on boring logs dated since 2000:

4.3 SUMMARY OF ADDITIONAL LABORATORY TESTING DATA
Sedimentation rate curves were obtained for this data set. Test data sheets are included in paragraph 4.7.
4.4 BORING LOG NOTES
Borings CB-CH-M14, CB-CH-FY83-M6 through CB-CH-FY83-M8, CB-CH89-27, CB-CH89-30, CB-CH89-33, CB-CH89-36 through CB-CH89-38, CB-CH89-41, CB-CH89-43 through CB-CH89- 45, CB-CH91-10, CB-CH92-2, and CB-CH92-5 were driven using a 5’ sampler with a procedure similar to the Standard Penetration Test (SPT). Blow counts indicated are those required for sampling only and do not correlate to the N-values of a SPT.
Borings CB-CH01-1, CB-CH01-2, CB-CH01-3B, CB-CH01-4 through CB-CH01-23, CB-CH01- 24A, CB-CH01-25B, CB-CH01-26C, and CB-CH01-27 through CB-CH01-30 were sampled using an Alpine style, pneumatic vertical hammer, vibracore drilling apparatus having a continuous 20-foot by 3 or 3 1/2-inch core barrel with clear plastic core liner until refusal was encountered.
Refusal is defined as no additional penetration of the vibracore with two minutes of additional effort applied to penetrate through the resistant layer at maximum vibration. The vibracore apparatus is equipped with a graph-type depth of penetration recorder.
The sampling method of borings CPA-12-14A, CPA-12-14B, and CPA-12-14C is unknown. These borings were collected by AMEC on behalf of the Canaveral Port Authority (CPA). The borehole sampling methodology information for these borings is not available. Test results listed in Table 3 for these borings were composite sediment samples collected at each boring location.
4.5 INSPECTION OF RECOVERED MATERIALS
None of the material recovered from core borings or vibracores drilled at the project site are available for examination. All previously collected core borings and vibracores have been discarded.

4.6 BORING LOGS
Applicable boring logs are presented on the following pages.
The borings represented in this section are available historic borings within the project area. Most of the materials within the project template presented on the boring logs have been removed by previous dredging events with subsequent shoaling of similar materials. The current elevations of the materials at these locations are shown on the contract drawings.
While the Government’s borings are representative of subsurface conditions at their respective locations and vertical reaches, local variations in the characteristics of the subsurface materials of this region are to be expected. Accordingly, prospective offerors shall form their own conclusions from the examination of the recovered materials prior to submission of their offer.
