Q&A

Q&A for W912DW25Q0008

1) Would it be acceptable to transport the generator offsite.

It is acceptable for the contractor to transport the generator offsite. As noted in section 3.4:

“The generator room will be made available for Contractor to make repairs onsite. If Contractor chooses to perform work at their own shop they are responsible for all freight/transportation cost.”

2) Contract asked to resurface the cylinder head and engine block surfaces. Did you want the technicians to remove the components to be professionally cleaned at a third part and reinstalled after cleaned?

The technician does not need to remove the engine components offsite to have a third party perform the work. The resurfacing of the mating surfaces can be performed onsite if the contractor has the appropriate skill set.

3) Under Section 4.1.1, the scope includes replacing the manifolds. However, based on the site assessment, the contractor noted no apparent issues with the intake, water, or exhaust manifolds. Could you confirm if their replacement is mandatory or intended as a precaution?

There was typo in the contract. Intent was to replace the gaskets for the manifolds. PWS will be updated to remove reference of manifolds.

4) Given that the engine has been sitting for several weeks with coolant in the cylinders, the contractor anticipates potential rusting in cylinders (e.g., 1-2 and 3-4). Section 4.1.1 specifies inspection but does not detail addressing cylinder liners. Could you confirm whether the replacement of liners should be included or excluded from the bid? Should we prepare an alternate quote to account for this?

The current scope does not include replacement of the cylinder liners. If rusting is observed after the engine is taken apart, a modification will be processed to capture that work.

5) For the specified 48-hour run-in, are there predetermined intervals for inspection and monitoring, or should the contractor decide on the schedule? Additionally, should this run-in be performed under load or via a load bank test?

The 48 hour run has been reduced to 24 hours. It will be up to the contractor to decide schedule. The test should be run via a load bank test. PWS will be updated to reflect the load bank test.

6) The tachometer on the main engine instrument panel currently shows 1300 RPM while the engine is off, and parts of the panel appear inoperable or bypassed (e.g., mode switch labeled "Normally Off"). Does the client require repair or replacement of any panel components as part of this project? Furthermore, is the displayed reading of 4263.6 hours accurate, or has the gauge been replaced since installation?

Yes tachometer should be replaced/repaired. PWS updated to reflect this.

7) Can you confirm that the generator will not be started before repairs commence? The contractor observed that the batteries remain connected, and there’s uncertainty about whether automatic starting equipment has been fully disabled. Since an unintentional start could risk hydrolock and further damage, this confirmation is crucial.

Generator will not be started before repairs commence.

8) The batteries, dated 2014, were observed to have significant corrosion at the terminals.

Would the client like the replacement of batteries and cleaning of the 24V engine electrical system to be included?

Replacement of batteries is not part of this scope.

9) Below in 4.1.1 second bullet the presumption would be to replace all head gaskets. The term used is singular and should be multiple.

Correct that there are multiple head gaskets. Language will be updated in the PWS to reflect plural.

10) Bullet point three states to replace “Manifolds”. There should be no need to replace all the manifolds other than the water manifold depending upon it’s condition after removing

it. The exhaust manifold and intake manifold looked to be serviceable as well may be the water manifold.

There was typo in the contract. Intent was to replace the gaskets for the manifolds. PWS will be updated to remove reference of manifolds.

11) Bullet point eight states to replace “engine cover plate” . What cover plate are we supposed to replace?

Removed from PWS

12) Bullet Point ten asks to service “Subsequent fuel system components”. Does that mean you want the PT Fuel Pump rebuilt or exchanged? There are not many other components to consider other than the fuel filter.

No the fuel pump does not need to be rebuilt or exchanged. Service of subsequent fuel system includes cleaning and inspecting lines in addition to replacing fuel filters.

13) Bullet Point eleven states to resurface cylinder head. The cylinder head would need to be completely disassembled which would lead into whether to restore the injector coppers, replace valves and seats etc. We would propose to exchange these heads for remanufactured heads

The PWS states resurface of the mating surfaces for the head and engine block. The mating surface being where the head gaskets will go between the block and head. What you are describing with the complete disassembly does not appear to be in line with is being asked.

14) Also on bullet point eleven states to “Resurface” engine block mating surfaces. This can not be accomplished without removing the entire engine and completely disassembling it. Perhaps you meant to say to prepare the surface of the top deck with standard cleaning and prepping as normal for top end 855 cylinder head replacement.

PWS has been updated to eliminate confusion. Resurfacing of engine block is not in the scope but inspection/cleaning/preparation of the block is. Resurfacing of the cylinder head mating surface (for the head gasket) is required if warping is observed.
