ELIN Use Examples
These examples do not include all ELIN quantities (qty) necessary to complete a project. They provide examples of how to use the ELINS in 2 potential features of work that may be encountered on a task order.
Example 1 - Trench Excavation and Backfill
Provide 100’ of 12” storm pipe beneath a roadway that is being repaired. Pipe invert is estimated to be
5’ below finished grade of pavement. Pavement grades are to remain the same; however, roadway sections will change. Existing HMA thickness is 2.5” over native soil. New pavement section will be 6”
HMA over 6” of base material.
1. Demo Existing Pavement and Excavate for Road Section – The new road section has a 12” depth.
To prepare the subgrade for the new pavement section, 2.5” of pavement and 9.5” of soil will need to be removed.
a. Remove the initial 2.5” of pavement through either ELIN 0031 Asphalt Pavement
Excavations or ELINs 0032, 0033, or 0034 Pulverizing, based on the Task Order
Requirements.
b. Remove 9.5” of soil using ELIN 0029.
2. Provide trench for placement of storm pipe. The pipe invert is estimated to 5’ below finished grade. Per JBLM Detail S-1 Gravity Sewer Trench Section, there should be a minimum of 6” of bedding beneath the pipe. Therefore, the required trench depth is:
66” (pipe invert below finished grade + 6” for bedding)
- 12” (new pavement section depth, removed existing pavement and subgrade)
54” = 4’-6”
Trench Excavation cross-section would have a bottom width of 24” (12” ID +12” per ELIN
Description) and a depth of 54”. The 1:1 side slopes would result in 2 additional triangular sections with 54” bases and height. The total trench cross-section:
1296 in2 (24” x 54”)
+ 2916 in2 (2 x (0.5 x 54” x 54”))
4212 in2 = 29.25 ft2
For 100’ of trench length, the total Structure Excavation (ELIN 0093) would be:
29.25 ft2 x 100 ft
2925 ft3 = 108 CY
This volume is likely not the required excavation to provide the pipe trench. It is likely that, through safe trenching practices, the excavation quantity would be less. Based on this example, the top of trench width would be 11 ft., which is not practical in most cases. Means and methods of the trenching is the responsibility of the contractor. Calculating volumes this way is done to reach a fair and reasonable cost to provide the labor, equipment, trench shielding, and supporting systems to complete the work. The contractor should base the CY pricing on their costs to provide trenching while meeting all applicable safety requirements.
3. Provide pipe bedding.
a. Cross-section of pipe bedding:
i. Total Bedding Height = 26”
1. 6 inches of bedding below the pipe
2. pipe height of 14” (~14” O.D.)
3. 6” of bedding above the pipe
ii. Trench bottom width of 24”
iii. Area of pipe = 154 in2 = 1.07 ft2
iv. Bedding cross-section
624 in2 (26” x 24”)
+ 676 in2 (2 x (0.5 x 26” x 26”))
1300 in2
- 154 in2 (pipe area)
1146 in2 = 7.96 ft2 of bedding per ft of trench
b. Volume of pipe bedding:
7.96 ft2
796 ft3 = 29.5 CY
4. Provide trench backfill from top of bedding to the pavement subgrade.
a. The backfill quantity (ELIN 0097), in this example, should equal the volume excavated minus the bedding volume and the pipe volume.
b. Pipe volume = 4 CY
c. Bedding volume = 29.5 CY
d. Excavation Volume = 108 CY
e. Total backfill volume = 74.5 CY
5. Summary: ELINs and quantities used:
a. ELIN 0093: Structure Excavation 0-5’ depth = 108 CY
b. ELIN 0096: Structure Bedding = 29.5 CY
c. ELIN 0097: Structure Backfill = 74.5 CY
d. ELIN 0113: Stormwater Pipe = 100 LF
Example 2 - HMA Paving with Subbase and Base Preparation
Provide repair of an existing roadway. The roadway is 1,000’ long consisting of (2) – 12’ travel lanes and
(2) – 5’ shoulders for a total width of 34’. Roadway section shall daylight at 3H:1V slope. The repair will consist of pulverizing the existing HMA pavement (3” depth), using the pulverized material as subbase material to smooth out the roadway profile, and provide new pavement (6” HMA pavement, 6”
Aggregate Base Course).
1. Pulverize the existing pavement, ELIN 0032 - Mobilize Pavement Pulverizing Equipment and
ELIN 0033 – Pulverize Asphalt Remain in Place.
a. For ELIN 0032, the quantity would be 1.
b. For ELIN 0033, the quantity would be 315 CY.
i. Roadway way length – 1,000’
ii. Roadway width – 34’
iii. Pavement depth - 0.25’
iv. 1,000 x 34 x 0.25 = 8,500 ft = ~315 CY
2. Use the 315 CY to raise ~ 200’ of the roadway base ~1’. Moving and placing the 315 CY within the worksite is already covered under ELIN 0033. ELIN 0035 – Grading and Compaction (95%) is used to grade and compact the pulverized material.
a. The area of subbase being raised:
i. Length = 200’
ii. Width = 45’ (36’(34’ +2’ for additional 1’ outside paving) + 9(Average additional width of the 1’ subgrade fill due to 3:1 slope of roadside))
iii. Area = 200’ x 45’ = 9,000 ft2 = ~1,000 SY
b. ELIN 0035 quantity = 2,000 SY. The quantity of 1,000 SY should be applied twice, once for the initial compaction after the pulverization, and again after the initial lift of pulverized subbase material.
3. Provide grading of compaction of entire subbase area prior to import of aggregate base material.
a. The total pavement subbase area:
i. Length – 1,000’
ii. Width – 39’ (34 + 2(1’ gravel shoulder each side) + 3(1.5 daylight width each side for aggregate base material)
iii. Area = 1,000’ x 39’ = 39,000 ft2 = ~4,333 SY
b. ELIN 0035 quantity = 4,333 SY
4. Provide base course material, grade, and compact.
a. Required base course material
i. Length – 1,000’
ii. Width – 37.5’ (34’ + 2’(1’ shoulder each side) +1.5’(2 x 0.75’(average additional width for 3:1 slope daylight for 0.5’ depth))
iii. Depth – 0.5’
iv. Volume = 1,000’ x 37.5’ x 0.5’ = 18,750 ft3 = ~694 CY
v. ELIN 0038 quantity Aggregate Base Courses = 694 CY
b. Grade and compacting base course, 6” base course depth can be placed in 1 lift.
i. Same area requiring base course material – 37,500 ft2 = ~4,167 SY
ii. ELIN 0035 quantity = 4,167 SY
5. Provide HMA pavement
a. Required HMA
i. Length – 1,000’
ii. Width – 34’
iii. Depth – 0.5’
iv. Volume = 1,000’ x 34’ x 0.5’ = 17,000 ft3
v. Tons = 17,000 ft3 x 150 lb/ft3 / 2000 lbs/ton = 1,275 tons
vi. ELIN 0061 quantity – 1,275 tons
b. Place and compact HMA pavement
i. ELIN 0037 Finish Grading and Rolling qty – 3,778 SY (1,000 x 34 / 9 = ~3,778 SY)
ii. ELIN 0067 Mobilize HMA Paving Equipment quantity – 1
iii. ELIN 0068 Placement, Compaction and Finishing HMA qty – 7,556 SY (2 x 3,778
SY) to account for two lifts of HMA.

d. ELIN 0037 – Finish Grading and Rolling = 3,778 SY
e. ELIN 0038 - Aggregate Base Courses = 694 CY
f. ELIN 0061 – HM CL ½ (Roadway) = 1,275 Tons
g. ELIN 0067 - Mobilize HMA Paving Equipment quantity = 1
h. ELIN 0068 - Placement, Compaction and Finishing HMA = 7,556 SY
