About this file

This document is a set of Questions and Answers related to a federal contract opportunity for Aerial Vegetation Control Spraying by Helicopter in North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska.

The key details are:

  • The contractor is responsible for supplying the chemicals (aquatic imazapyr and aquatic glyphosate) as well as storage and disposal of containers. The herbicides must meet specific percentage requirements.
  • The chemicals will be applied at maximum allowed rates of 6 pints/acre for imazapyr and 7 pints/acre for glyphosate, at a rate of 5 gallons of mix per acre.
  • Aerial imagery of the spray areas will be provided to the contractor in mid-to-late August, and staging areas within 5 miles of the spray sites will be available.
  • The related federal contract opportunity is Solicitation Number W9128F24Q0062 issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineering District Omaha for Aerial Vegetation Control Spraying by Helicopter.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q. I have been asked if you have any preliminary aerial images that you can share with us for our client?

A. The general images of general areas as needed / requested will be posted with the Q&A, but we won’t know the actual specific spray sites within those general areas until mid- to late-August, due to the nature of the growing season (we are targeting first-year vegetative growth). The imagery is publicly available from NAIP and is from September 2023.

Q. I also, would like to make clear if the government is supplying the chemicals or are the chemicals part of the bid?

A. The contractor is responsible for supplying the chemicals, as well as storage and disposal of containers, if applicable.

Q. Verifying the chemical - spraying a mix of aquatic imazapyr and aquatic glyphosate?

A. Yes, we are applying a tank mix of aquatic imazapyr and aquatic glyphosate, at max rates for each herbicide (6 pints per acre imazapyr, 7 pints per acre glyphosate). This is done to minimize chances of creating herbicide-resistant vegetation as well as maximizing effectiveness of the spraying. Both herbicides will be mixed into the spray tank along with adjuvants (e.g. – LI700 and drift retardant as necessary) and water, and applied at a rate of five gallons mix per acre.

Q. What specific chemical/fertilizer are we spraying with?

A. The contractor will be supplying two herbicides (glyphosate and imazapyr) along with a surfactant (e.g. – LI700) and a drift retardant as necessary. The glyphosate must contain 53.8% N-

(phosphonomethyl)glycine in the form of isopropylamine salt} as found in Rodeo® or its generic equivalent. The imazapyr must contain 27-29% active ingredient Isopropylamine salt of Imazapyr:

2-[4,5-dihydro-4-methyl-4-(1-methylethyl)-5-oxo-1H-imidazol-2-yl]-3-pryidinecarboxylic acid;

equivalent to 22.6% 2-[4,5-dyhydro-4-methyl-4-(1-methylethyl)-5-oxo-1H-imidazol-2-yl]-3-pyridinecarboxylic acid. Both herbicides will be applied at maximum allowed rates (e.g. – 6 pints/ac for imazapyr, 7 pints/ac for glyphosate) at five gallons per acre minimum. All label restrictions will be followed.

Q. Will you be supplying the chemical for spraying?

A. The contractor is responsible for supplying the chemicals, as well as storage and disposal of containers, if applicable.

Q. What is the desired concentration of the solution mixture (are we going off label)?

2-[4,5-dihydro-4-methyl-4-(1-methylethyl)-5-oxo-1H-imidazol-2-yl]-3-pryidinecarboxylic acid;

equivalent to 22.6% 2-[4,5-dyhydro-4-methyl-4-(1-methylethyl)-5-oxo-1H-imidazol-2-yl]-3-pyridinecarboxylic acid. Both herbicides will be applied at maximum allowed rates (e.g. – 6 pints/ac for imazapyr, 7 pints/ac for glyphosate) at five gallons per acre minimum. All label restrictions will be followed.

Q. How many gallons or pounds of the substance do you intend to spray per acre?

A. The contractor will apply five gallons of mix per acre. The mix will contain 6 pints per acre imazapyr, 7 pints per acre glyphosate, non-ionic surfactant, drift retardant as necessary, with the balance of the mix being water.

Q. Can you please provide a "shape file" or aerial image of the area to be sprayed?

A. Area Maps will be posted on SAM. Exact shapefiles will be provided to the contractor, but not until mid- to late-August, due to the nature of the growing season (we are targeting first-year vegetative growth).

Q. Is there an available 150' x 150' clear staging area near the sites:

A. Staging areas (landing zones) are available within five miles of areas to be treated, with most LZs being within three miles. These areas have been used as LZs in past years, and vary from parking areas to rural highway field approaches to remote township roads. In most cases, a government representative will be on site for public interaction as well as contract quality control.
