Re: Geotechnical Drilling and Laboratory Services Letter Midfield Building B9231 Addition Midfield Building B9231 Colorado Springs, Colorado Terracon Project No. 23205009
Terracon Consultants, Inc. (Terracon) has performed geotechnical exploration services for the above referenced project. This study was performed in general accordance with our Agreement for Services P23205009, dated March 3, 2020. This letter presents the findings of the subsurface exploration and results of laboratory testing for the proposed project.
FIELD EXPLORATION PROCEDURE
Terracon mobilized to the site on June 1 and 2, 2020. On June 1 prior to drilling activities, soft dig practices were requested by PEC to clear the three boring locations. Hydro-vac soft dig practices were preformed to depths of about 8 feet at the boring locations prior to the borings being drilled. The soft dig was used to clear an “L” shaped area at each boring location with the boring located near the inside intersection of the “L” as shown below:
Underground utilities were not observed within the hydro-vac soft dig locations with the exception of one, approximately 6-inch diameter PVC line located about 7¾ feet below existing grade that appeared to be a water line. It was observed approximately 19 feet north and 28 feet east of the northeast building corner about 3 feet northeast from Boring B-3. Photos of the observed utility as well as general site photos have been included in the Photography Log at the end of this letter.DRAFT
Geotechnical Drilling and Laboratory Testing Letter Midfield Building B9231 Addition ■ Colorado Springs, Colorado June 19, 2020 ■ Terracon Project No. 23205009
Reliable ■ Responsive ■ Resourceful 2
Three borings were advanced to depths of approximately 25.5 feet below existing site grade at the approximate locations shown on the attached Exploration Plan on June 2. The locations of the borings were located with a handheld GPS unit (typical horizontal accuracy within 15 to 20 feet) and staked by Terracon in advance of our field exploration. The accuracy of the boring locations should only be assumed to the level implied by the methods used.
Borings were advanced with a CME-55 truck-mounted drill rig using continuous flight, 4-inch solid-stem augers. Five samples were obtained in the upper 10 feet and at intervals of 5 feet thereafter. In the split-barrel sampling procedure, a standard 2-inch outer diameter split-barrel sampling spoon is driven into the ground with a hammer. The number of blows required to advance the sampling spoon the last 12 inches of a normal 18-inch penetration is recorded as the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) resistance value, or correlated to a SPT value depending on the hammer weight and hammer drop height. The SPT resistance values, also referred to as N-values, are indicated on the boring logs at the test depths. A 3-inch O.D. split-barrel sampling spoon with 2.5-inch I.D. ring lined sampler was used for sampling in the upper 14 feet. Ring-lined, split-barrel sampling procedures are similar to standard split spoon sampling procedure; however, blow counts are typically recorded for 6-inch intervals for a total of 12 inches of penetration. We observed and recorded groundwater levels during drilling and sampling, and groundwater observations are indicated on the boring logs and summarized in the text below.
Groundwater was observed at a depth of approximately 22 feet below existing site grade in Boring B-3 at the time of our drilling operations. Groundwater was not observed in Borings B-1 or B-2 at the time of our drilling operations. Groundwater level fluctuations occur due to seasonal variations in the amount of rainfall, runoff and other factors not evident at the time the borings were performed. Groundwater levels during construction or at other times may be higher or lower than the levels indicated herein. The possibility of groundwater level fluctuations should be considered when developing the design and construction plans for the project.
Our borings were backfilled upon completion of drilling operations. Some settlement of the backfill should be anticipated.
Our exploration team prepared field boring logs as part of standard drilling operations including sampling depths, penetration distances, and other relevant sampling information. Field logs include visual classifications of materials encountered during drilling, and our interpretation of subsurface conditions between samples. Final boring logs, prepared from field logs, represent the Geotechnical Engineer's interpretation, and include modifications based on observations and laboratory tests.
LABORATORY TESTING
Laboratory testing consisted of plasticity index (Atterberg Limits) and grain size analyses of three samples, moisture density relationship analysis (standard Proctor) and California Bearing

Ratio (CBR) testing of one sample, consolidation/swell testing of two samples, unit weight analysis of fourteen samples, and moisture content analysis of twenty samples obtained from the three borings performed at the site.
Results of CBR testing are not complete at the time of our compiling this letter. Results of CBR and testing will be issued after testing has been completed. Results of the remaining laboratory testing are presented on the attached borings logs and as separate graphical attachments.
GENERAL COMMENTS
The data presented in this letter is based upon information obtained from the borings performed at the indicated locations. This letter does not reflect variations that may occur across the site or due to the modifying effects of construction or weather. The nature and extent of such variations may not become evident until during or after construction. If variations appear, we should be immediately notified so that further evaluation can be provided.
The scope of services for this project does not include either specifically or by implication any environmental or biological (e.g., mold, fungi, bacteria) assessment of the site or identification or prevention of pollutants, hazardous materials or conditions. If the owner is concerned about the potential for such contamination or pollution, other studies should be undertaken.
This letter has been prepared for the exclusive use of our client for specific application to the project discussed and has been prepared in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering practices. No warranties, either express or implied, are intended or made. Site safety, excavation support, and dewatering requirements are the responsibility of others.
We appreciate the opportunity to be of service to you on this project. If you have any questions concerning this letter, or if we may be of further service, please contact us.

GENERAL NOTES
DESCRIPTION OF SYMBOLS AND ABBREVIATIONS
Water levels indicated on the soil boring logs are the levels measured in the borehole at the times indicated. Groundwater level variations will occur over time. In low permeability soils, accurate determination of groundwater levels is not possible with short term water level observations.
Water Initially Encountered Water Level After a Specified Period of Time Water Level After a Specified Period of Time Cave In Encountered
Exploration point locations as shown on the Exploration Plan and as noted on the soil boring logs in the form of Latitude and Longitude are approximate. See Exploration and Testing Procedures in the report for the methods used to locate the exploration points for this project. Surface elevation data annotated with +/- indicates that no actual topographical survey was conducted to confirm the surface elevation. Instead, the surface elevation was approximately determined from topographic maps of the area.
LOCATION AND ELEVATION NOTES
Soil classification as noted on the soil boring logs is based Unified Soil Classification System. Where sufficient laboratory data exist to classify the soils consistent with ASTM D2487 "Classification of Soils for Engineering Purposes" this procedure is used.
ASTM D2488 "Description and Identification of Soils (Visual-Manual Procedure)" is also used to classify the soils, particularly where insufficient laboratory data exist to classify the soils in accordance with ASTM D2487. In addition to USCS classification, coarse grained soils are classified on the basis of their in-place relative density, and fine-grained soils are classified on the basis of their consistency. See "Strength Terms" table below for details. The ASTM standards noted above are for reference to methodology in general. In some cases, variations to methods are applied as a result of local practice or professional judgment.
DESCRIPTIVE SOIL CLASSIFICATION
The soil boring logs contained within this document are intended for application to the project as described in this document.
Use of these soil boring logs for any other purpose may not be appropriate.
