1.3 DEFINITIONS
1.3.1 Zone
A zone is a partial depth of curtain based on the depth that fractures are identified in the exploratory primary grout holes. No predetermined depths will be used and each zone will be established by the Contracting Officer's Representative based on the location of major fractures and joints that are observed in the exploratory primary grout holes. These fracture locations will be projected to other grout holes to establish the zones as needed to facilitate filling them with grout from the bottom up. All grouting in a given zone and section shall be finished before work is started in the next higher zone.
1.3.2 Section
A section is a reach along the grout curtain, not more than 40 feet in length in which grouting operations will not be permitted at the same time that drilling is in progress. Insofar as practicable, the grout curtain will be subdivided into sections in a manner which will facilitate the Contractor's operations and not cause harm to grouting already injected into open joints and fractures. No drilling will be allowed through any portion of an open joint or fracture which is being grouted or in which the grout has not reached final set.
1.3.3 Stage
A stage is one complete operational cycle of drilling, cleaning, pressure washing, pressure testing, pressure grouting, and grout cleanout within a zone. It may also refer to a discreet length of the grout hole used for the purposes of defining a water pressure testing and grouting interval that is isolated with a packer. The actual depth and length of a stage depends upon geologic conditions encountered in drilling. It may vary from a fraction to the full depth of the zone or grout curtain, and may be marked by the loss or gain of drill water in appreciable amounts. If no significant loss or gain of drill water is observed, drilling will continue to the bottom of the curtain, and upstage grouting will be done in stages, the length of which will be determined by the Contracting Officer's Representative, but will typically not exceed 20 to 30 feet. If a significant loss or gain of drill water is observed, the Contracting Officer's Representative, at their discretion may require down stage drilling and grouting. Upstage grouting is anticipated even if some loss or gain of drill water is encountered so that the objective of filling the open cracks with grout from the bottom up is achieved.
1.3.4 Stop
A stop is a depth at which the expanding plug or packer is positioned based on the results of exploratory drilling and Optical televiewer images.
SECTION 31 32 23 Page 4
1.3.5 Split Spacing
Split spacing is the procedure of locating an additional grout hole midway between two previously drilled and grouted holes.
1.3.6 Grout Hole and Exploratory Primary Grout Hole
Grout Hole generally refers to all holes in which grout will be injected, and may or may not include exploratory primary grout holes, depending on the context. Exploratory primary grout hole refers specifically to those grout holes that will be core drilled, water pressure tested and imaged with an optical televiewer on the primary hole spacing of 20 feet horizontally for the purpose of locating subsurface joints and fractures
