About this file

This document contains a technical specification section outlining requirements for side seal assemblies on Tainter gates at Mills Dam. The specification covers stainless steel and steel components for the assemblies, including fasteners, bars, plates, angles, and retainers. Rubber side seals must be natural rubber molded to the required configuration, reinforced, and coated with Teflon on the face contacting the pier wall. The specification provides physical property requirements for the rubber seals. Neoprene gaskets must also meet stated standards. The contractor will remove and replace side seal assemblies as needed, ensuring the seals contact the pier wall within a preset tolerance when gates are closed. New seals will be trimmed as required. The contractor must inspect and adjust seals that experience leakage after gates return to service.

The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation from the US Army Corps of Engineers Engineering District Little Rock seeking sources to perform blast cleaning, painting, anode replacement, and repair of Tainter gates at Mills Dam. Additional incidental work includes repairing or replacing specific steel components and miscellaneous grinding and welding of steel.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 SIDE SEAL ASSEMBLIES

The side seal assemblies shall be removed prior to cleaning and painting the Tainter gates. The assemblies include the rubber seals, retainer plates, support angle, neoprene gaskets, and all fasteners. The rubber seal, support angle, retainer plates, and associated fasteners shall be replaced when directed by the COR.

Side seal support angles and retainer plates shall be shop fabricated, including Shop Drawings, to the greatest extent possible. Upon fabrication, and prior to assembly, the steel shapes shall be painted to the same requirements as the gate.

After the gates have been painted, the side seal assemblies shall be installed and adjusted to ensure contact between the side seal and pier wall, when the gate is in the closed position, with a preset of 1/4 in +/- 1/8 in. Preset is defined as the distance the seal would deflect into the pier wall, if the wall were removed. Moly disulfide dry powder or Teflon powder shall be applied to the threads of all side seal bolts prior to tightening. When new side seals are identified fot installation the bottom corner of the side seal assemblies shall be trimmed to obtain seal at the bottom of the gate in accordance with maximum gap indicated elsewhere in this specification.
