1.1 WORK COVERED BY CONTRACT DOCUMENTS
This Specification Section describes the San Joaquin River Right Bank, PL 84-99 Emergency Levee Repairs, Site 1151-11 Project, including location and access, existing facilities, the Contractor's use of the premises, project occupancy, and the work to be performed by the Contractor. The description of the work to be performed that is provided herein is intended to be a general overview and does not include all the work actually required under the Contract.
1.2 TYPE OF CONTRACT
This Contract consists of Lump Sum and Unit Price Bid Schedule Items.
1.3 PROJECT LOCATION
The project is located on the right bank of the San Joaquin River approximately 7.1 miles east of Tracy in San Joaquin County, California.
The exact work is shown on the Plans.
1.4 PROJECT DESCRIPTION
1.4.1 Project Description
The work includes the construction of an approximately 1,500-foot-long seepage berm with a chimney drain along the right bank of the San Joaquin River. The existing emergency berm will be excavated and stockpiled for reuse for construction of the berm. The berm will be 150 feet wide, 5 feet thick at the levee toe and 3 feet thick at the toe of the berm. The chimney drain will be approximately 10 feet tall above the levee toe. The seepage berm and chimney drain will include a 0.5-foot-thick layer of filter sand, 1-foot-thick layer of drain blanket, and geotextile separator overlain by fill materials. An existing drainage ditch will be backfilled and new drainage pipe constructed outside the seepage berm toe. During construction, until the new drainage system is constructed and is functional, a temporary open channel will be maintained to collect and conduct drainage flow around this project site to the existing sump north of site. The existing ditch will be backfilled with Random Fill prior to construction of the seepage berm.
1.4.2 Borrow Area
The Contractor must identify a local borrow source with sufficient material to construct the proposed work. Required on site excavation may be used as fill materials provided they meet, or can be blended to meet, the requirements of these Specifications.
1.4.3 Water Supply for Construction

1.4.5 Site Access
Refer to the Plans for information regarding site access points and haul routes.
1.5 EXISTING FACILITIES
Existing facilities are shown on the Plans to the extent known.
1.6 LOCATION OF UNDERGROUND UTILITIES
Overhead and underground utilities exist within the project area and along access/haul routes that will be protected in place. The Contractor must be responsible for the locating all underground utilities and for coordinating its work with the appropriate Utility Owner as needed. Notify the Contracting Officer and Underground Service Alert (USA) at least 48 hours prior to starting excavation work to locate and mark utilities, and within sufficient time required if work occurs on a Monday or after a Holiday.
Any damage to existing utilities by the Contractor must be repaired at no cost to the Government. The Contractor must be responsible for protecting any utilities near work or haul/access roads.
1.7 CONTRACTOR'S USE OF THE PREMISES

d. Materials and equipment must be stored and protected, as recommended by the manufacturer or required by applicable codes and standards, to guarantee preservation of quality, appearance, and suitability for the Project. They must be stored to facilitate inspection by the Government.
e. The Government will provide the lands, easements, and right of way, or other rights of entry to do the required work. Nothing herein contained and nothing marked on the Plans, must be interpreted as giving the Contractor exclusive occupancy of the lands, easements, or right of way provided by the Government.
SECTION 01 11 00 Page 3 July 2020
f. The work areas and the areas for the Contractor's use are shown on the Plans.
