Items required are Automated Surface Vehicles (ASV) designed and manufactured to be rugged to the marine domain. The ASV shall be designed to be consistent in speed and maneuverability in turning left and right for each platform and among each platform – this is critical as analysis of multi-robot autonomy interactions relies on consistent physical capabilities and performance so that perceived on-water behavior is the result of on-board algorithms and not physical limitations. The ASV shall be capable of integrating additional computers (companion or backseat computers) which is required to transition artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to a real platform. The ASV shall be man-portable which is important for transportation between lab, test site, and placing in the water. Its size and portability are important for safety while on the water to reduce the potential damage in the rare case of collision and manipulation during recovery. The following are required, minimum, features of the ASV system:
a. Hull:
Capable of Operational Sea State: Min Beaufort Wind Scale Identifier 4
Hulls are industrial marine grade FRP and then foam filled.
Dunk testing;
First article testing of first production hull include full submersion and overturn to evaluate seal survivability.
• Bow dunk
• Stern dunk
• Port dunk
• Starboard dunk
• Inverted dunk
Every hull has a leak test performed (with hull underwater) prior to foam installation.
Hull penetrations with conduits above the waterline
Water Performance is documented for every hull with a Power vs Speed test.
Transportable & fully assembled unit, launched by one person ideally and two persons max with no additional equipment required
Hull Type: Man-portable catamaran hull design Coloring: White with standard Red/Green Port/Starboard coloring for user situational awareness Hull Construction: Foam filled fiber reinforced plastic Hull Length: <2 meter Vehicle Beam: <1 meter
b. Safety:
Passive safety – colors starboard and port indicated without power required.
Autonomous fail safes (features):
• 2X integrated battery backups with automatic shutdown scripts
• Work within defined boundary
• Minimum operating depth failsafe
• Lost communications failsafe Selectable actions: Continue, standby, station keep, return to recovery position
• Realtime battery capacity feedback via integrated Battery Management
System (BMS)
• Low battery fault warning & annunciation to user
• Internal time stamped logging of all low level and high-level parameters including:
Commanded & current thrust Commanded and current control mode Commanded and current heading Speed over ground Course over ground System current
System Voltage Battery Capacity Port thruster current, RPM, & stator temp, & stall faults Starboard thruster current, RPM, & stator temp, & stall faults Fault status Input out/ status (current condition of each On/Off function status)
