G. Inspection shall consist of visual examination during or after manufacture, fabrication, assembly, or pressure tests.

H. This inspection shall include nitrogen pressure test, at which time the gas piping shall stand a pressure of not less than 25% of the components rated operational pressure. If the low-pressure testing is successful, the pressure shall then be gradually increased to test if the system will maintain its integrity at higher pressure. Test pressures shall be held for a length of time satisfactory to the COR, but in no case less than 2 hours with no perceptible drop in pressure

I. The piping system shall withstand the test pressure specified without showing evidence of leakage or other defects. Reduction of test pressures as indicated by pressure gauges shall be deemed to indicate the presence of a leak unless such reduction is readily attributed to some other cause.

J. The leakage shall be located by means of an approved gas detector, a noncorrosive leak detection fluid, or other approved leak detection process. Methods that provide a source of ignition shall not be used.

K. Where repairs or additions are made following the pressure test, the affected piping shall be re-tested. Minor repairs and additions are not required to be pressure-tested provided that the work is inspected and connections are tested with a noncorrosive leak-detecting fluid or other leak-detecting methods approved by the COR.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION

TITLE: MANDATORY DIRECTIVE: Sole-Source Utilization of Swagelok Fittings and Tubing for Heat Treat Nitrogen Purge Systems

AUTHORITY: Senior Technical Advisor, Electronics Technician, Certified GTAW APPLICATION: Gaseous and Liquid Emergency Safety Systems

1.0 SCOPE AND PURPOSE

This technical specification establishes the mandatory technical requirements for the material selection, fabrication, and installation of emergency purge piping systems serving heat treat furnaces under TAWV-ODH-S purview. The primary objective is to guarantee life-safety system readiness and establish a zero-leak tolerance baseline.

2.0 MATERIAL STANDARDIZATION & SOLE SOURCE DIRECTIVE

To ensure life-safety reliability, interoperability of critical repair components, and absolute leak-tight integrity across the installation, the following components are designated as mandatory standards:

2.1 Tube Fittings: Swagelok Company manufactured double-ferrule compression fittings are the sole authorized fitting for this application. Mixing fitting brands or utilizing press-fit systems is strictly prohibited.

2.2 Tubing Material: Tubing shall be fully annealed, seamless Type 316/316L Stainless Steel compliant with ASTM A269 or ASTM A213 standards. Welded tubing is not authorized.

3.0 REQUIRED TUBING SPECIFICATIONS (WALL THICKNESS)

All stainless-steel instrumentation tubing must conform to the exact Outer Diameter (OD) and Wall Thickness schedule detailed below.

Nominal Tubing OD Mandatory Wall Thickness

Material Type

1/4 inch 0.035 inch Seamless 316/316L SS

3/8 inch 0.035 inch Seamless 316/316L SS

1/2 inch 0.049 inch Seamless 316/316L SS

3/4 inch 0.065 inch Seamless 316/316L SS

1 inch 0.065 inch Seamless 316/316L SS

4.0 FABRICATION AND INSTALLATION CONSTRAINTS

All fabrication and installation shall be executed cold. Installers must adhere to the following absolute engineering constraints:

4.1 The "No-Bend" Mandate: Field, shop, or mechanical bending of the stainless-steel tubing is strictly prohibited. All changes in direction, elevation, or routing shall be accomplished exclusively using a Swagelok manufactured elbow (90, 45) and tee fittings.

4.2 Tubing Preparation: All tubing ends must be cut squarely. Both inner and outer burrs must be completely removed and cleaned prior to insertion into the fitting body.

4.3 Pre-swaging for Large Diameters: For tubing sizes 1 inch and 1-1/4 inch, installers are required to use a Swagelok Multi-head Hydraulic Swaging Unit (MHSU) or an authorized manual pre-swaging tool prior to final in-place assembly.

5.0 PERSONNEL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING

5.1 Mandatory Certification: All personnel performing fabrication, assembly, or installation of fittings under this specification must possess a current and valid Swagelok Tube Fitting Installation Training Certificate.

5.2 Documentation Submission: Prime contractors and internal maintenance teams must submit copies of these certificates to the Office of the Senior Technical Advisor (or designated QA representative) prior to the commencement of any work.

6.0 QUALITY ASSURANCE AND GAP INSPECTION

6.1 Mandatory Gap Inspection: Upon final assembly, 100% of installed fittings must be verified by a certified installer or QA inspector using the appropriate size-specific Swagelok Gap Inspection Gauge. Any joint that fails this gauge test must be corrected immediately.

6.2 Support and Hangers: Tubing shall be supported by rigid, vibration-dampening strut clamps (e.g., Cush-A-Clamp). Supports shall be placed at a maximum interval of 6 feet for horizontal runs.

7.0 POST-INSTALLATION TESTING AND COMMISSIONING

To objectively verify zero-leak integrity prior to placing the life-safety system into service, the following testing protocols are mandatory:

7.1 Hydrostatic Testing Prohibition: The introduction of water or liquid testing media into the purge system is strictly prohibited. Residual moisture can freeze during an emergency cryogenic nitrogen dump, creating blockages.
