Industry Questions & Answers
1. Question: What is a maximum grinding length from the part top?
Answer: The cradle length is 14.63" +/- 0.30 And the piston length is 19."
2. Question: 3.1. “Geared drive system” is requested. Our manufacturer uses more advanced direct motor for the table drive. Please confirm that the direct motor table drive is permitted.
Answer: The cone drive worm gear box design is requested. However, any proposed new technology will be evaluated.
3. Question: 3.1.1. What is a maximum grinding length from the part top? (we asked already this question in email dated August 5, 2023) Answer: The cradle length is 14.63" +/- 0.30 And the piston length is 19."
4. Question: 3.1.5. “The table shall be driven directly by a cone drive worm gear box design” is a requirement. Our manufacturer uses more advanced direct motor instead of cone drive worm gear box. Please confirm that the direct motor table drive is permitted.
Answer: The cone drive worm gear box design is requested. However, any proposed new technology will be evaluated.
5. Question: 3.1.6. “Collet chuck with tooling for ID and OD” is requested. It is a problem to find in industry the collet chucks for such table size. What are ranges of clamping diameters and clamping torques for ID and OD? Are another types of work clamping system permitted?
Answer: 5.1. ID 17.625” / 17.875” OD 14.00” / 14.375”.
5.2. Yes. If the fixtures design holds the part in a manner that support the dimensional characteristics required for acceptance by Quality Control.
6. Question: 3. Question: 3.1.14. Please defined CGC true mount system.
Answer: This is an feature alignment.
7. Question: 3.3. Is it possible to increase the floor space to 20’ x 20’? That space is required for a vertical grinder with requested machining envelope.
Answer: Yes.
8. Question: 5.1. In the Statement of Work the project completion is 300 calendar days of award. In Solicitation it is 365 calendar days of award. Unfortunately that is impossible.
We ask to permit 450 calendar days of award.
Answer: The completion time requested will remain at 365 days
9. Question: What is the room size where machine will be placed?
Answer: The approximate dimensions of the proposed room are 24 feet- 2 inches wide side to side by 28 feet- 8 inches deep front to back.
10. Question: What is the door size for machine entry?
Answer: The Door access to room is approximately 10 foot wide.
11. Question: What is roof height of installation place?
*Please provide length, width, and/or height, if applicable.
Answer: Front 17 feet 4 inches, Back 15 feet 11 inches.
The approximate dimensions of the proposed room are 24 feet- 4 inches wide side to side by 28 feet- 8 inches deep front to back.
12. Question: Will there be an overhead crane installed in the room area?
Answer: Yes. There will be an overhead crane installed. The intention is to duplicate the process that is currently in place.
13. Question: Will it be installed before or after delivery?
Answer: Any overhead crane system needed to support the process will be installed after installation of the equipment. There is currently no timeline for the purchase and installation of an overhead crane in the new area.
14. Question: 3.3. If there is an overhead crane in the machine shop area, what is a height under rail? Also, is it permitted to put the grinder in the pit?
Answer: 15.1 A pit will be considered and evaluated as an option.
15. Question: Would it be possible to get a 2D drawing of the two principal parts that y’all want to grind on the new machine? We just need the chucking and grinding requirements mainly.
Answer: Yes
16. Question: Would it be possible to get the floor layout with walls and access points in a 2D drawing so we can see precisely what the install parameters would be like?
Answer: Yes.
17. Question: The incoming door width and height next to the room that the grinder is slated to be installed in would be a helpful number to have as there is a corner that needs to be turned going in during the installation. Can we get this size as well?
Answer: The outside overhead door width is 10.0 feet, and the height is approximately 10.0 Feet. The inside overhead door width is 10.0 feet, and the height is approximately 10.0 Feet.
18. Question: Just to verify the material type is hard chrome? Is there a specification for this material?
Answer: The material is Hard Chrome the hardness is 62-65 RC.
19. Question: What voltage and amperage is currently in the room where the new machine would be installed?
Answer: Voltage 480/277 3PH 60Hz 4 Wire 1200 AMP
20. Question: 3.1 General Requirements. The CNC Vertical Grinding Machine shall be capable of performing the operations of I.D. and O.D. grinding, flat-surface grinding, coordinated vector grinding, and vertical turning.
Answer: Yes. vertical turning is required.
21. Question: 4.3 Performance Test. Unless otherwise specified the performance test shall consist of the tests listed in ASME B5.16. The Government reserves the right to specify any or all the test listed in these standards.
