HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL

MANUAL CONTENT

Overview

The front matter in this manual consists of general warnings, title block page, and table of contents.

The information contained in this manual is presented in four chapters. Each chapter is divided into Work Packages (WPs) that cover general information, troubleshooting procedures, maintenance procedures, and other information for specific systems or components. Each WP starts on a right hand page. Page numbers consist of the WP number followed by a dash and another number. For example “0014 00-7” means WP 0014 00, page 7.

At the end of this manual are an alphabetical index, DA Form 2028, and metric conversion chart.

Chapters

Chapter 1 provides general information, equipment description, and theory of operation.

Chapter 2 provides the preshop inspection.

Chapter 3 provides maintenance instructions.

Chapter 4 provides supporting information, consisting of references, expendable and durable items list, tool identification list, mandatory replacement parts, and wear limits, fits, and tolerances.

Alphabetical Index

An index is located after the last WP in this manual that provides an alphabetical listing of information and components/assemblies contained in this manual.

Warnings, Cautions, and Notes

You must read and understand this manual BEFORE performing overhaul of the cross-drive transmission assembly.

Throughout this manual you will see WARNING, CAUTION, and NOTE headings. There are good reasons for every one of these notices:

WARNING

A warning is used to alert the user to hazardous operating and maintenance procedures, practices, or conditions that could result in injury or death. Warnings must be strictly observed.

CAUTION

A caution is used to alert the user to hazardous operating and maintenance procedures, practices, or conditions that could result in damage to, or destruction of, equipment or mission.

NOTE

A note highlights an essential operating or maintenance procedure, condition, or statement.

Warnings and cautions appear immediately preceding the step to which they pertain. It is important to read and thoroughly understand the warnings and/or cautions before beginning maintenance. Notes may precede or follow the steps to which they pertain, depending on what makes the most sense.

Initial Setups

Before starting a task, you must obtain all the tools, supplies, and personnel listed in the initial setup. Be sure to read the task before performing the maintenance. If any other tasks are referenced, you must go to the initial setup page for each of those tasks to find out what tools, supplies, and personnel will be needed.

Change 1 0001 00-2

CORROSION PREVENTION AND CONTROL (CPC)

Corrosion Prevention and Control (CPC) of Army materiel is a continuing concern. It is important that any corrosion problems with this item be reported so that the problem can be corrected and improvements can be made to prevent the problem in future items.

While corrosion is typically associated with rusting of metals, it can also include deterioration of other materials, such as rubber and plastic. Unusual cracking, softening, swelling, or breaking of these materials may be a corrosion problem.

If a corrosion problem is identified, it can be reported using SF 368, Product Quality Deficiency Report. Use of key words such as “corrosion”, “rust,” “deterioration,” or “cracking” will ensure that the information is identified as a CPC problem.

The form should be submitted to the address specified in DA PAM 750-8, The Army Maintenance Management System (TAMMS).

STANDARDS

1. Quality of Materiel. Unless otherwise specified, parts and material used for repair or modification will comply with equipment drawings and specifications.

PRESHOP INSPECTION 0003 00

PURPOSE

1. The purpose of the preshop inspection is to determine, prior to beginning overhaul activities, the extent of overhaul required to return the transmission to NMP overhaul standards.

2. A transmission assembly is considered economically repairable when the estimated cost of repair does not exceed the maximum expenditure limit for the assembly (see TB 750-98-24).

UNPACKING

WARNING

The transmission assembly weighs approximately 4125 lb (1871.07 kg). Use appropriate lifting device with a weight capacity greater than the transmission assembly when lifting or moving the transmission.

When required to unpack the transmission assembly, caution must be exercised when lifting equipment is necessary. There are no special instructions required. Do not remove tags or forms until actual overhaul is begun.

REVIEW OF RECORDS AND DATA

Physically check all tags and forms attached to the equipment to determine the reason for its removal from service and other discrepancies. Do not remove attached tags or forms until actual overhaul is begun.

PRELIMINARY CLEANING

1. Cleanliness is essential in all overhaul operations. Dirt and dust, even in minute quantities, are abrasive.

Precision-lapped surfaces of rotating parts must be protected from dust and dirt at all times. Be sure parts are cleaned as specified and be sure they are kept clean. Do not handle parts with greasy hands. Dusty and grimy clothing must not be worn.

Solvents can burn easily, can give off harmful vapors, and are harmful to skin and clothing. Wear protective goggles and gloves and don’t breathe vapors. To avoid injury or death, keep away from open fire and use in well ventilated area. If solvent gets on skin or clothing, wash immediately with soap and water.

2. Cover all openings of the transmission with tape or other suitable materials and thoroughly clean all external parts and other surfaces. Make sure that no foreign matter enters working parts. External surfaces of transmission may be steam cleaned. Remove grease and oil with cleaning compound solvent or mineral spirits applied with a stiff brush.

3. Ensure that all openings are covered to prevent entry of water or other contaminants.

4. Apply a light coat of preservative oil, MIL-PRF-21260E, type I, Grade 10, to all bare metal surfaces.

NOTE

Vapor-degreased and steam cleaned parts must be treated immediately to prevent rust.

0003 00-1

PRESHOP INSPECTION—Continued 0003 00

IN-PROCESS INSPECTION

1. In-process inspection requirements are provided in the disassembly and assembly procedures.

2. Unless otherwise specified, used components and refinished parts recovered as products of disassembly will be examined 100 percent by the National Maintenance Management (NMM) Repair Site to determine serviceability.

3. Tolerance, wear limits, corrosion limits, torque values, and adjustments are provided for each task to which they apply.

DISASSEMBLY OF CROSS-DRIVE TRANSMISSION

1. Instructions for disassembly of the cross-drive transmission assemblies XT-1410-4 and XT-1410-5A are contained in TM 9-2520-215-34 (XT-1410-4) or TM 9-2520-590-34 (XT-1410-5A).

2. Use caution in handling parts during disassembly. Careless handling may cause subsequent failure of equipment.
