About this file
This is a Questions and Answers document for a Request for Information (RFI) regarding domestically sourced rare earth magnets for small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS), Notice ID W51AA102042026, with a closing date of February 11, 2026 at 1:00pm EST.
The procurement involves rare earth magnets required for motor manufacturing by Tobyhanna Army Depot. The government is manufacturing 480,000 motors total, requiring 14 magnets per motor for an estimated total of 6,720,000 magnets. The demand forecast includes 320,000 units of model 2807 (4,400,000 magnets), 80,000 units of model 3115 (1,112,000 magnets), and 80,000 units of model 2407 (1,112,000 magnets). The magnets must be N52SH grade with specific properties at room temperature: Maximum Energy Product (BH)max of 49-53 MGOe, Remanence (Br) of 1.42-1.48 Tesla, Intrinsic Coercivity (Hcj) greater than 19 kOe, and Coercivity (Hcb) of 10.5kOe. At operating temperature, magnets must not exceed 90 degrees Celsius with nominal ambient of 50 degrees Celsius, and reversible magnetic field strength loss must not exceed -0.14% per degree Celsius. All magnets require a protective coating for corrosion resistance that is compatible with epoxy adhesives. Pole orientation must have 7 magnets with North poles on the outer diameter and 7 with North poles on the inner diameter, centered in arc segments with a 23.7-degree arc angle and 1-1.5mm thickness.

Questions and Answers
Domestically Sourced RARE EARTH MAGNETS FOR sUAS, Notice ID W51AA102042026
RFI Closing Date is Feb. 11, 2026 at 1:00pm EST
1) Who is the motor manufacturer?
Answer: Tobyhanna Army Depot.
2. You require 14 pcs per motor; how many motors are you purchasing?
Answer: Manufacturing 480,000.
3. What is the demand forecast for each motor?
Answer: FOR PLANNING PURPOSES ONLY: Projected 320,000 of the 2807’s. 80,000 of the 3115’s, and 80,000 of the 2407’s.
4.What is the purpose of the plating requirement? If it is corrosion resistance only, then we would propose an alternative coating. If there is another purpose other than corrosion resistance, please advise.
Answer: The coating is required for corrosion resistance. Alternate coating would work but must be compatible with mounting adhesives such as epoxy.
5. Can an exception be made to radial orientation of magnetization? - with a 23.7 degree arc angle and 1-1.5 mm thickness there would be little variation in magnetic orientation (<~10%) AND it would not require discrete tooling.
Answer: Pole orientation is required to be centered in the arc segment in the radial direction. It does not need to be continuous radial about the arc segment. Sets of 14 magnets required 7ea. North on the OD and 7ea. North on the ID.
6.What are the nominal requirements for N52SH at room temperature?
Answer:
Maximum Energy Product (BH)max: 49-53 MGOe
Remanence (Br): 1.42 - 1.48 Tesla
Intrinsic Coercivity (Hcj): >19 kOe
Coercivity (Hcb): 10.5kOe
7.What are the nominal requirements for N52SH at operating temperature?
Answer: Nominal operating temp should not exceed 90 deg C operating at upper ambient temperature extreme of 50deg C. Reversible loss of magnetic field strength (Br) should not exceed -0.14% / deg C
8. 14 magnets/motor * 480,000 motors, therefore will you need a total of 6.720 million magnets? i.e. 320,000 x 14 = 4,400,000 pcs of 2807s, 80,000 x 14 = 1,112,000 pcs of 3115's and 80,000 x 14 = 1,112,000 pcs of 2407s?
Answer: The magnet calculation (14 X 480,000 = 6,720,000) is correct, as an estimated quantity.
