About this file
This is a Questions and Answers document for RFI Notice ID W51AA102042026 regarding domestically sourced rare earth magnets for small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS). The RFI closing date is February 11, 2026 at 1:00 PM EST.
The government is procuring rare earth magnets (N52SH grade) for motors manufactured by Tobyhanna Army Depot, with a total production volume of 480,000 motors. Each motor requires 14 pieces of magnets, resulting in a demand forecast of 320,000 units of the 2807 motor model, 80,000 units of the 3115 model, and 80,000 units of the 2407 model for planning purposes. The magnets must meet specific technical requirements including a maximum energy product of 49-53 MGOe, remanence of 1.42-1.48 Tesla, and intrinsic coercivity greater than 19 kOe at room temperature. At operating temperature (not to exceed 90°C at 50°C ambient), reversible magnetic field strength loss must not exceed -0.14% per degree Celsius. The required coating is for corrosion resistance and must be compatible with epoxy mounting adhesives; alternative coatings are acceptable if compatible. Pole orientation must be centered radially with seven magnets polarized North on the outer diameter and seven on the inner diameter per set. Discrete radial magnetization tooling is not required for the specified 23.7 degree arc angle and 1-1.5 mm thickness parameters.

Questions and Answers
Domestically Sourced RARE EARTH MAGNETS FOR sUAS, Notice ID W51AA102042026
RFI Closing Date is Feb.11, 2026 at 1:00pm EST
1) Who is the motor manufacturer?
Answer: Tobyhanna Army Depot.
2. You require 14 pcs per motor; how many motors are you purchasing?
Answer: Manufacturing 480,000.
3. What is the demand forecast for each motor?
Answer: FOR PLANNING PURPOSES ONLY: Projected 320,000 of the 2807’s. 80,000 of the 3115’s, and 80,000 of the 2407’s.
4. What is the purpose of the plating requirement? If it is corrosion resistance only, then we would propose an alternative coating. If there is another purpose other than corrosion resistance, please advise.
Answer: The coating is required for corrosion resistance. Alternate coating would work but must be compatible with mounting adhesives such as epoxy.
5. Can an exception be made to radial orientation of magnetization? - with a
23.7 degree arc angle and 1-1.5 mm thickness there would be little variation in magnetic orientation (<~10%) AND it would not require discrete tooling.
Answer: Pole orientation is required to be centered in the arc segment in the radial direction. It does not need to be continuous radial about the arc segment. Sets of 14 magnets required 7ea. North on the OD and 7ea. North on the ID.
6. What are the nominal requirements for N52SH at room temperature?
Answer:
Maximum Energy Product (BH)max: 49-53 MGOe
Remanence (Br): 1.42 - 1.48 Tesla
Intrinsic Coercivity (Hcj): >19 kOe
Coercivity (Hcb): 10.5kOe
7. What are the nominal requirements for N52SH at operating temperature?
Answer: Nominal operating temp should not exceed 90 deg C operating at upper ambient temperature extreme of 50deg C. Reversible loss of magnetic field strength (Br) should not exceed -0.14% / deg C
