About this file
This is a Geotechnical Data Report documenting subsurface exploration conducted by AECOM for the Indiana Air National Guard's proposed New Entry Control Point at Hulman Field in Terre Haute, Indiana. The project involves constructing a visitor check-in building, overwatch position, expanded pavements, new site utilities, and associated security infrastructure on a low-relief site with elevations between 588.4 and 590.2 feet above sea level, located approximately 1,000 feet southwest of the entry road entrance from Indiana State Route 42.
The subsurface investigation included four exploratory soil borings (SB-01 through SB-04) advanced to depths of 10 to 20 feet between November 16-18, 2018, along with Standard Penetration Testing and laboratory analysis. The site profile consists of asphalt pavement (10-12 inches thick) or topsoil overlying predominantly fat clay (CH) and lean clay (CL) units with varying moisture and consistency. At the deepest boring (SB-03), a gravelly to sandy lean clay with gravel unit was encountered, substantially stiffer than overlying clays. Groundwater was encountered at depths of 6 to 11 feet at three of four borings. Laboratory testing included moisture content, particle size analysis, Atterberg limits, and consolidation testing on representative samples. Geotechnical recommendations address foundation design using continuous reinforced concrete mat foundations for the visitor building (bearing pressure 1,500 psf), spread footings or drilled shaft foundations for canopy structures, subgrade preparation with undercutting for slabs and flexible pavements, seismic site classification as Site Class D, and construction considerations including excavation, dewatering, and fill placement specifications. The report notes that surface and utility grades will require minimal modification with only nominal cuts and fills generally less than 2 feet in various site areas.
