About this file
This file is the Interim Visual Brand Guidelines 2023 for The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, a Connecticut-based organization. The guidelines establish comprehensive standards for consistent brand presentation across all organizational communications and promotional materials, whether created internally or by vendors and consultants. The document outlines mandatory requirements for logo usage, including three logo variations (primary, stacked, and seal-only), with specifications for full-color and single-color applications. Typography standards designate Montserrat as the primary font for headlines and Open Sans as the secondary font for body copy, with specific point sizes and weight recommendations. The guidelines provide an expanded color palette informed by market testing and natural color elements, complemented by white and soft black. Photography standards emphasize bold, colorful, documentary-style imagery showcasing detail and movement, with particular attention to diversity when featuring people, requiring signed releases for all photographs including individuals.
All materials utilizing The Maritime Aquarium logo require approval from the Philanthropy and Engagement team through the Marketing, Communications, and Creative Requests Tracker, with inquiries directed to Danielle Tranzillo, VP Philanthropy and Engagement, or Amy Diaz, Director Marketing and Communications. The guidelines note that the organization is developing these interim standards while finalizing its new strategic plan ("An Aquarium Without Walls") and conducting a brand awareness study, with full brand guidelines expected to evolve accordingly. All communications must adhere to ADA compliance standards, use sentence case, and maintain consistency with the organization's mission to inspire appreciation and protection of the Long Island Sound ecosystem through exhibits, marine science, and environmental education. Alternate fonts may be used for specific campaigns or exhibits only with advance approval from the Philanthropy and Engagement team.

Brand Overview
Brand Identity Brand identity is of utmost importance for businesses as it can play a vital role in attracting and retaining customers. A strong and well-defined brand helps to differentiate the business from its competitors and creates a unique identity in the minds of consumers. It allows customers to easily recognize and recall the business, which can lead to increased trust and loyalty.
Adhering to brand guidelines is crucial for any business, and it is particularly important for internal stakeholders to follow them closely. The guidelines provide a set of standards and principles that ensure consistency and coherence across all aspects of the business's communication and visual identity. By adhering to these guidelines, internal stakeholders can help to strengthen the brand and maintain a strong and recognizable identity. They have an active role in reinforcing the business's values, personality and messaging, which can lead to increased loyalty and advocacy among customers and—ultimately—long-term success for the business.
