Building 36 Brick Repair 528A5-17-517 Scope of Work Building 36 Brick Repair
1.1 EXISTING CONDITIONS
The Canandaigua VAMC is a campus facility with many (more than 30) buildings located on over 200 acres and 3 CBOC locations in Rochester, NY. Building 36 was built in the 1940’s and requires repair of the exterior brickwork on the Southeast wing and main entrance stairs on the East side of the building.
1.2 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
A. The contractor shall provide all labor, supervision and materials necessary to perform the work as indicated in this scope of work, specifications and drawings.
B. The contractor is responsible for all field measurements; the Government will not be held responsible for bidding errors made or the failure to adequately inspect the job site for existing conditions, dimensions and grades or existing utilities. Site utility plans are available but the contractor is responsible for verifying these utilities through the UFPO or other resources. All bidders are strongly encouraged to inspect the job site prior to submitting bids.
C. Any existing features disturbed by the contractor during the performance of this contract shall be restored to similar or better condition by the contractor at the contractors’ expense.
D. All discrepancies between drawings, utility surveys or specifications shall be brought to the attention of COR prior to commencing work.
E. All drawings notated with “install, provide or new” infer that the contractor is responsible for providing all materials and labor associated to complete that phase of the project as well as the project overall.
F. The VAMC Project COR shall govern all work done during project duration. The contractor will immediately correct any work in which the Project COR deems unacceptable or not in accordance with plans and/or specifications.
G. Contractor will be responsible for removing all construction spoils from the site.
1.3 REQUIREMENTS FOR BRICK REPAIR
1. The contractor will be required to remove any split/sheared/spalled brick as indicated on the project drawings and replace with new that match size, color and consistency as noted in the specifications and drawings. The contractor will be required to tuck-point the new bricks and existing bricks as indicated in the specifications and drawings. Details are as follows:
A. All tuck-pointed joints shall match existing in size, color and finish. A small area of at least 3 brick courses high by 3 brick sections in width must be pointed and approved by COR prior to continuation of work.
B. All terra cotta sections that are removed must be carefully set aside and stored for reinstallation when brickwork and tuck- pointing are completed. Any sections that are believed to be in poor condition for reinstallation must be brought to the attention of the COR prior to replacing with new.
C. All new brick sections will require the installation of stainless steel dovetail anchors as noted in project drawings. COR must inspect new sections for proper anchoring before work is to continue.
D. All new brick sections must match the existing brick in size, color and material. A small section of at least 3 brick courses high by 3 brick sections in width shall be inspected and approved by COR prior to continuation of work.
E. All roofing materials that are removed for parapet repair must be reinstalled by the contractor after brickwork/terra cotta caps have been installed. The contractor must warranty the installation of this roofing for a period of 1 calendar year from acceptance. Any sections not deemed as acceptable for re-installation shall be brought to the attention of the COR prior to replacement.
1.4 REQUIREMENTS FOR STAIRS/CHEEK WALLS
A. Contractor shall be required to remove all terra cotta stair cap sections and set aside for reinstallation after repair work on cheek walls/stair sections completed. Sections considered unacceptable shall be brought to the attention of the COR prior to replacing with new.
B. Cheek walls shall be removed entirely to the existing footing and rebuilt with new brick and pointed to accept terra cotta cap. Details for existing cheek walls and replacement are indicated in project drawings and specifications C. Contractor shall excavate the existing earth surrounding cheek walls/stair sections to the existing footing and inspect with approval of COR prior to rebuilding sections. Footings deemed unacceptable shall be repaired as indicated in project documents.
D. The contractor will rebuild the new cheek walls once demolition phase has been completed and approved by COR. This will consist of installing new angle iron for a brick ledge, new brick and mortar, installation of new anchors, weeps and mortar mesh as well as replacement of any disturbed sidewalk sections leading up to the stairs themselves.
E. A new center handrail section will be required to be installed by the contractor once the stair construction is complete. They will be made of stainless steel, be 1 1/2” in diameter and be no more than 10’ in length per section. The sections of handrail will be sleeved on the horizontal sections so they can easily be replaced if damaged. The handrails will fasten to the stair sections with stainless steel fasters and anchors epoxy set in the granite. They will extend past the last stair section at the lowest elevation no less than 16” and have a rolled, welded seem that connects the top and bottom horizontal section of the handrail. All handrails must be ADA compliant.
