About this file

This Statement of Work (SOW) details the manufacture, inspection, test, and delivery of the Upper Wide Angle Viewing System (UWAVS) Ex-Vessel Subsystem for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project. The UWAVS is a diagnostic system for the ITER project, designed to provide real-time visible and infrared images of the divertor region across four upper ports (2, 8, 11, and 14), supporting machine protection, plasma control, and physics measurement.

The SOW is divided into two primary phases: Phase 1 involves preparation for manufacturing, including documentation development, CAD work, and prototyping, culminating in a Manufacturing Readiness Review (MRR). Phase 2 covers manufacturing, assembly, testing, and delivery, with specific requirements for component fabrication, quality assurance, and documentation. The project involves three main assemblies: the Interspace Optics Tube (IOT), Bioshield Optics Labyrinth (BOL), and Back End Optics and Camera (BEOC). The contract duration spans from contract award through site acceptance, with detailed milestone schedules extending to approximately 173 weeks after receipt of order, including multiple article fabrications, factory acceptance tests, and on-site integration support.

1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 PROJECT OVERVIEW

International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) (http://www.iter.org) is an international project under construction in Saint Paul-lez-Durance, France (ITER St-Paul) that will demonstrate nuclear fusion at a power plant-relevant scale. ITER is a joint international research and development project with the programmatic goal to demonstrate the scientific and technical feasibility of fusion power. The ITER machine is being constructed in a collaboration with seven partners consisting of the United States, European Union, China, Russia, South Korea, Japan, and India. The US ITER Project Office (USIPO) is hosted by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), which is located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. ORNL works in partnership with Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) and Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) on USIPO scope. PPPL is responsible for several diagnostic systems supplied to ITER, pursuant to direction from the Department of Energy in its role as the ITER Domestic Agency for the United States. One of the ITER diagnostic systems being provided by PPPL is the Upper Port Visible/Infrared Wide-Angle Viewing System (UWAVS).

1.2 SUBJECT OF THIS SOW

The objective of this SOW is to specify:

(1) the manufacturing, procurement, and delivery of UWAVS EX-Vessel components, for four upper ports (2, 8, 11,14);

(2) the necessary assembly and testing activities to verify compliance with requirements of the supplied and manufactured parts;

UWAVS will provide real-time, simultaneous visible and infrared images of the ITER divertor region, via optical systems located in five upper port plugs (2, 8, 11, 14, and 17) as shown in Figure 1. UWAVS provides machine protection (monitoring for overheating of surfaces), plasma control (basic and advanced), and physics measurement roles.

Figure 1. View of the UWAVS diagnostics on Divertor

The UWAVS system is divided into three sections according to their location: In-Vessel, Ex-Vessel including the Interspace and Port Cell as shown as Figure 2, and Gallery and Diagnostic Building.

Figure 2. In-Vessel and Ex-Vessel Assemblies

The Ex-Vessel components of the UWAVS diagnostic reside in the Interspace, Bioshield, and Port Cell in the of upper ports 2, 8, 11, and 14.

The primary function of the Ex-vessel system is to pass light through an optical mirror train from the port plug to the cameras that are mounted in the port cell.

• The scope for this SOW to deliver the Ex-Vessel system that consists of three assemblies identified in Table 1.

3.1.1 INTERSPACE OPTICS TUBE (IOT) ASSEMBLY

The Interspace Optics Tube assembly resides in the Interspace which is mounted to the Interspace Support Structure (ISS), provides active beam steering to compensate Vacuum Vessel thermal displacements during operation and function as an optical relay. The Interspace Optics Tube consists of five subassemblies: the A40 mirror, A50 mirror group, interface plate assembly, optical bench and enclosure assembly, and Interspace Optics Tube services assembly as shown in Figure 3.
