About this file

This is a specification document from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Illinois Nature Preserves Commission detailing required specifications for a fire skid sprayer to be mounted on utility terrain vehicles. The skid must not exceed 51 inches wide by 32 inches deep and includes a 50-60 gallon baffled polypropylene tank with integrated fill tower, lift handles, and water level visibility features. The equipment must feature a high-pressure, low-volume diaphragm pump with a maximum flow of 9.6 gallons per minute and maximum pressure of 580 psi, powered by a minimum 5 horsepower gas engine with 163 cubic centimeter displacement. The hose system consists of 250 feet of 3/8-inch diameter hose with 500 psi burst rating mounted on a rear-facing electric reel with at least 275-foot capacity and four-sided roller guide. All components must be chemical resistant and compatible with water-based pesticides, with a pistol-style multiple spray pattern nozzle equipped with a quick disconnect.

The specifications document prescribes detailed equipment requirements including a high-pressure mounted plumbing system with inline water strainer/filter, pressure regulator with gauge and two outlets, cold weather recirculation connection, and hose reel lock. The engine must be gas-powered with transistorized magneto ignition and either recoil or electric start capability with low oil alert functionality. Hose and component placement is specified with the hose reel positioned on the driver side facing the vehicle's rear and the engine and pump located on the passenger side. The document explicitly prohibits inclusion of a foam reservoir and indicates preferences for yellow or red hose color and 3/8-inch hose diameter over the acceptable but less-preferred 1/2-inch alternative.
