About this file

This document is a Request for Information (RFI) issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for Boarding Pass Scanner (BPS) equipment and associated support services. The RFI seeks information on vendors' capabilities, products, and pricing to validate the authenticity of boarding passes and communicate passenger screening status to Transportation Security Officers.

Key details include:

  • The BPS must be able to read and authenticate 2D barcodes on boarding passes, display screening results, and interface with TSA's Secure Flight program. The BPS must meet size, weight, power, security, and user interface requirements.
  • Vendors are requested to provide information on their products, including technical specifications, environmental tolerance, safety certifications, calibration needs, commercial availability, pricing, and lead times.
  • Responses are due by May 22, 2023 and should be submitted via email. The government will review responses for market research purposes only and may hold technical information exchange meetings.
  • This is an RFI only and does not commit the government to issuing a solicitation. Vendors will not be reimbursed for response costs.

Configuration
Yes ☐ No ☐
Configuration: The BPS shall be configured for airport use and not require complex interactions with the unit upon arrival to the airport in order to start performing screening activities. The purpose of this requirement is to indicate when a BPS is received, it will work out of the box with minimal initial setup effort. Acceptable initial setup interactions include unpacking the unit, mounting the unit, plugging it in to an outlet or putting in a battery, turning on the unit, charging the battery before use, or configuring the unit without the use of a computer or external device. Unacceptable activities include configuring BPS using a computer or external device or updating firmware or software version.
Mounting
Yes ☐ No ☐
Mounting: The BPS shall be mountable and capable of being affixed to Lavi Beltrac stanchions using a vendor provided mounting device.
Electrical
Yes ☐ No ☐
Power: The BPS shall operate on commercially available 120 Volts Alternating Current (VAC) power at 60 hertz (Hz) with up to ± 5% voltage tolerance and ± 3% frequency tolerance at no more than 1.5 ampere service. The BPS shall be able operate on replaceable, rechargeable batteries in the event that AC power is unavailable.
Obsolescence
Yes ☐ No ☐
System Updates: The BPS shall allow for system updates. System updates could include new software/firmware that add additional functionality or updating public keys on the system.

HSI: Screening equipment is expected to meet basic requirements regarding the graphical user interface. These requirements are described in the following section.
Graphical User Interface (GUI)
Yes ☐ No ☐
GUI: The BPS shall display the scan results for a configurable duration. The default setting for scan result display duration shall be twelve seconds unless another boarding pass is scanned. The BPS shall allow the operator to configure the airport location and date on the unit without connecting to an external source (computer, network, etc.).
Audible Responses
Yes ☐ No ☐
Audible: The performance characteristics of the system with respect to audible responses include: 1 • Providing a single audible beep/alert sound for every boarding pass type to acknowledge the BPS scanned the barcode. 2 • Providing a method on the unit to adjust the volume of the audible responses

Please provide a picture of the system.
