About this file
The document is a Sole Source Notification (SSN) issued by the University of Wyoming's Procurement and Payment Services for the acquisition of a Leica Stellaris 8 Falcon-Sted Microscope from Leica Microsystems. The university intends to issue a sole source purchase order for this specialized scientific instrument, with electronic submissions for statements of capabilities accepted through BidNet's portal until 2:00 PM (MT) on September 15, 2025. The microscope offers unique capabilities, including white light laser technology, STED nanoscopy, FALCON imaging, hybrid photon-counting detectors, and spectral detection, making it the only commercially available microscope that integrates fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) and true super-resolution imaging within a single platform.
The microscope is specifically designed to provide researchers with an unprecedented resource for studying subcellular localization, protein interactions, and nanoscale dynamics across various biological systems including plants, fungi, bacteria, and single-cell algae. The procurement is being conducted as a sole source notification, meaning the university is seeking to determine if any other vendors can comprehensively provide a comparable product. The university reserves the right to be the sole judge in reviewing responses regarding quality, performance, and price, and maintains discretion in determining whether to proceed with a competitive solicitation based on the responses received.

SOLE SOURCE NOTIFICATION (SSN) -TGP-2025-27
Proposed Sole Source Purchase for Leica Stellaris 8 Falcon-Sted Microscope
The University of Wyoming (the University) intends to issue a sole source purchase order to Leica Microsystems for the Leica Stellaris 8 Falcon-Sted Microscope.
Any purchase order resulting from this proposed sole source will be governed by the University of Wyoming’s Terms and Conditions.
The minimum requirements of this purchase are included below:
Technical Features Summary
1. White Light Laser (WLL) with Acousto-Optical Beam Splitter (AOBS®)
• Continuously tunable excitation from 440–790 nm (1 nm precision).
• Enables simultaneous excitation of up to 8 laser lines with independent intensity control.
• Essential for exciting modern engineered fluorescent proteins (GFP variants, YFP, etc.).
2. STED (Stimulated Emission Depletion) Nanoscopy
• True commercial super-resolution system from Leica.
• Achieves resolution <50 nm lateral, <130 nm axial.
• Flexible across visible spectrum with three STED depletion lines (589, 660, 775 nm).
• Includes TauSTED for lifetime-based resolution tuning and background suppression.
3. FALCON (Fast Lifetime Contrast Imaging) & TauSense
• Rapid, photon-counting based FLIM, at least 10× faster than traditional TCSPC.
• TauSense provides lifetime-based species separation, autofluorescence removal, and molecular interaction detection (FRET).
• Enables functional readouts of pH, ion concentration, metabolic status.
4. Power HyD® Detector Family
• Hybrid photon-counting detectors with ultra-low noise and broad sensitivity (410–850 nm).
• Configurations include:
o Power HyD® S: High sensitivity for GFP, CFP, YFP.
o Power HyD® X: Optimized for FALCON and Tau-STED.
o Power HyD® R: Specialized for near-infrared FLIM.
5. Spectral Detection (SP® Detection)
• Prism-based dispersion for efficient spectral separation of overlapping fluorophores.
• Filter-free, adjustable bandwidth detection (5–440 nm) with up to 5 simultaneous channels.
• Superior signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range for live-cell imaging.
This instrument is the only commercially available microscope that integrates both fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) and true super-resolution imaging (STED nanoscopy) within a single platform. The

Any interested party that believes it can comprehensively provide a comparable product as noted above, shall submit a Statement of Capabilities in sufficient detail to determine if the specifications can be met.
University of Wyoming will only accept or consider electronic submissions received in BidNet’s electronic solicitation portal on or before 2:00 PM (MT) on September 15, 2025. Submissions received after this date and time or received outside of the BidNet portal may not be considered. The University shall be the sole judge in reviewing responses with regards to quality, performance, and price.
This notice is issued for informational purposes only and is NOT a request for competitive quotes or proposals. Information received will be considered to determine whether to conduct a competitive solicitation. A determination to not compete this proposed procurement based upon responses to this notice is solely within the discretion of the University.
Any restrictions on the use or inspection of material contained within the statement of capabilities shall be clearly stated in the document itself. The Supplier must state specifically what elements of the statement of capabilities are to be considered confidential/proprietary. Confidential/proprietary information must be readily identified, marked, and separately packaged from the rest of the response. Co-mingling of confidential/proprietary and other information is NOT acceptable. Procurement Services will make a written determination as to the apparent validity of any request for confidentiality. The written decision of Procurement Services will be sent to the Supplier as required.
