6. Control wiring shall be routed with the mainline wherever possible. Low- voltage wiring shall be uf # 14-1 PVC jacketed, single conductor cable, colored red for ‘’Hot’’ wires, white for valve common, and blue for spares, a minimum of two of which shall be run from the controller location to the farthest zone valve in each direction. Wires shall be installed with adequate slack and surge/expansion loops, and shall be spliced only in valve boxes, using ‘’dri-splice’’ wire connectors and sealant, or other waterproof type, if prior approval is obtained.

7. All heads shall be of the proper type for the plant material where located, and shall be installed in the prescribed manner, plumb, and with the proper height with respect to grade and plant height. All heads and other equipment shall be installed with adequate and uniform clearances from all paving, curbs, sidewalks, walls, and other obstacles, so that damage to equipment does not occur during Landscape Maintenance operations. All sprinklers shall be adjusted to obtain maximum coverage of plant material, while minimizing overspray onto windows or walls, or other impervious surfaces, particularly woodwork and/or trim. The installer shall utilize suitable pressure- compensating screens or adjustable arc nozzles where required to achieve maximum cover control.

8. The riser-mounted heads shall be installed at a location inset into the first row of plant material, so that the risers are protected and concealed by the plants. Risers and stakes shall be painted a durable flat color to be agreed upon by the parties.

9. Each controller shall require a standard 120-vac power feed, which shall be coordinated and hooked up by the installer or his designated electrician. A 3-wire power input surge arrestor shall be provided on the power feed, and a dedicated ground rod or rods shall be installed, which provide a resistance of no greater than 10 ohms to earth.

10. Each controller shall be equipped with a properly located and installed rain shutoff device, which shall be located in such a manner so that it is unobstructed and directly exposed to natural rainfall and sunlight from all directions, but not to runoff water from roofs, etc.

11. The minimum supply requirement for the system as designed is 30 gpm at 55 psi.

12. Each well pump will require a suitably sized 220-vac power feed, which shall be coordinated by the installer. Pumps shall be wired to start electrically from the irrigation controllers.

13. The wells shall be drilled to a depth so as to provide the cleanest water practically available.

The installer shall have the water from both wells tested and shall notify the owner immediately of any objectionable results (rust, odor, large particles, foreign objects, etc.) and shall suggest corrective actions.

14. The installer shall be expected to be familiar with and follow the instructions contained herein, on the drawings, in the construction details, and in the written specifications.

Should a conflict be discovered within the documents, he shall immediately notify the project manager and request clarification.

15. If this installation shall be supplied by wells until a reclaimed water supply becomes available. The work shall include any and all materials and methods required for the approved installation thereof, whether or not specifically indicated whether or not specifically indicated in the documents, including the installation of any required warning signage.

Notes:

1. All pipe sizes shall not exceed a velocity of 5’/ sec.

2. Use 12” pop-ups in ground cover beds.

3. Use 30” risers in shrub beds & hedges.

4. All heads shall be min. 4” from paved surfaces.

5. Use pressure compensating screens to adjust nozzle radius were necessary.

Appendix C

Irrigation System Installation Procedures

A. Place a stake or flag at every sprinkler location as indicated on your layout. Use string to show where the pipe will run.

STOP! Make sure you know where all gas lines, power lines and cable TV lines are before you start to dig. Be sure to call your utility companies if you need help.

B. Dig trenches following the string. Mark the sprinkler locations with flags or the stakes. Typical trench depths range from 6 to 12 inches.

To run pipe under existing walkways you can "drill" using water pressure. Get a piece of PVC long enough to go under the walk, glue a slip-female thread adapter to one end and attach a hose. On the other end glue, a slip-male thread adapter and connect a Jet Spray Nozzle.

Dig your trench up to the walk on both sides. Now turn on the water and work your way through.

It may take a while, and it will get muddy so turn off the water occasionally to let the water soak in.

Hook up your water supply.

C. Assemble your valve manifold. Connect the back-flow preventer if required.

PVC pipe is available in a variety of diameters and wall thicknesses. Your system will operate better and be more durable using a larger diameter (3/4", 1", or 1 1/4"), heavier gauge (schedule

40) pipe.

Poly pipe is mostly used in colder climates. Poly pipe is more flexible and is less likely to be damaged by freezing. We do not recommend using poly pipe for the main line connecting pipe.

PVC cement is applied to the inside of the fitting and the outside of the pipe. Quickly insert pipe all the way, giving a 1/4 turn to distribute the cement and hold a few seconds.

A primer is available to prepare the pipe and fittings for gluing. Read the manufacturer’s instructions before using PVC cement.

Poly is assembled by sliding a clamp over the pipe, insert the fitting all the way then bring the clamp into position and tighten.

D. Place lengths of pipe along the string after laying out the right sprinklers and connectors at each stake.

E. Start assembling moving from one sprinkler location to the next. Don't connect the sprinkler until everything is assembled so that you can flush the system with water to clear out any dirt that got in the pipes.

F. Manually flush the system.

Turn on the water at the "shut-off" to supply your system, then operate the valves manually to flush the system. Open each valve to flush the pipe with water, then close.

Refer to the valve instructions for manual operation. You should do this with each valve.

G. Attach the sprinklers after flushing the system with water.

H. Wire the valves to the timer following the instructions that come with your timer. Be sure to write down which timer "station" runs which zone and keep these notes near your timer.

I. Test each zone, using the timer to control the valves. Make any adjustments to the distance and directions of the sprinklers.

J. When everything is working right, bury the pipe.
