About this file

This technical specification document outlines the requirements for Silica Microsand to be supplied to a Florida water treatment facility for use in coagulation and flocculation processes to remove organic color and turbidity from surface water. The material must consist of hard, durable, and dense grains of predominantly siliceous material with a specific gravity greater than 2.5 and acid solubility less than 5%. The effective size range is 0.130mm to 0.150mm, with a uniformity coefficient equal to or less than 1.75. The sand must be visibly free of clay, dust, micaceous matter, and organic matter, and must not introduce extraneous materials that would violate Federal and State Safe Drinking Water Act regulations. Bidders must be either manufacturers or authorized distributors of Silica Microsand, and the manufacturer must be NSF Certified with production occurring at an NSF Certified facility.

Quality control and testing shall be conducted in accordance with all AWWA and ASTM specifications, with the awarded supplier responsible for providing a Material Compliance Certificate of Analysis for each lot shipped, including sieve analysis and calculations for effective size and uniformity coefficient. A one-pound representative sample must accompany each delivery. The Awardee must provide proof that the Silica Microsand meets National Sanitation Foundation Standards 60 and 61 for potable water treatment approval. If the product is not currently NSF approved by product name, the facility producing the sand must possess NSF approval while the application for the specific bid product is processed.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION FOR SILICA MICROSAND

1. GENERAL

The material bid shall be Silica Microsand used for coagulation and flocculation in the surface water process for removal of organic color and turbidity.

2. PRODUCT

2.1 Silica Microsand bid shall have the following characteristics:

· The Silica Microsand shall consist of hard, durable, and dense grains or predominately siliceous material that will resist degradation during handling and use.

· The Silica Microsand shall have a specific gravity of greater than 2.5 and an acid solubility of less than 5%.

· The Silica Microsand shall be visibly free of clay, dust, micaceous matter and organic matter.

· The effective size of the Silica Microsand shall be in the range of .130mm to 0.150mm.

· The uniformity coefficient of the Silica Microsand shall be equal to or less than 1.75.

· The Silica Microsand bid shall not introduce any extraneous materials which would cause a violation of any Federal and State SDWA regulations.

3. QUALITY CONTROL AND TESTING

3.1 Sampling and testing shall be conducted in accordance with all AWWA and ASTM specifications.

3.2 It shall be the Awardee’s responsibility to provide a Material Compliance Certificate of Analysis for each lot of Silica Microsand shipped indicating the sieve analysis and calculations used in determining the effective size and uniformity coefficient of each lot.

3.3 A one-pound representative sample of each lot shall accompany each delivery.

4. MANUFACTURER

The bidder shall state the name of the manufacturer of the Silica Microsand to be supplied. The manufacturer shall be NSF Certified and the Silica Microsand shall be produced at an NSF Certified facility.

5. QUALIFICATION OF BIDDERS

Bids will only be considered from manufacturers or authorized distributors of Silica Microsand.

6. DELIVERY SUBMITTAL

The Awardee shall provide proof that the Silica Microsand to be provided is approved for potable water treatment and meets the National Sanitation Foundation Standards 60 and 61. If the Silica Microsand is not currently NSF approved by product name, the facility producing the Silica Microsand must have NSF approval while application for approval of the bid product is being processed.
