About this file

This is a Technical Specifications document for a micro-XRF sensor system to be integrated into the GMEG Science Center's existing Geotek MSCL-XZ-II Joint Hyperspectral Analyzer Work Station (JHAWS) at Moffett Field, California.

The system must provide non-destructive, rapid geochemical analysis of soft-sediment and hard-rock drill core samples with an elemental detection range from aluminum to uranium. The X-ray source shall operate at 4–50 kV with a 15 W sealed Rh or Mo target tube, paired with a large-area silicon drift detector (SDD) achieving spectral resolution of ≥133 eV at Mn Kα. The system requires a helium-flushed measurement cell to quantify low-energy elements (Na, Mg, Si, Al) accurately, with a changeable X-ray filter assembly and easy-to-replace transparent window. Precision stage movements must deliver ≥0.5 mm down-core collimation and ≥5 mm cross-core collimation to enable geochemical element mapping at better than 1 cm spot-sizes across split-core surfaces. Software must provide full control of X-ray settings and filter positions, spectral analysis and fitting, elemental mapping capabilities, fundamental parameters calibration, and exportable XRF spectra with full integration into existing Geotek software controlling JHAWS.

The delivery includes fully on-site upgrade and installation by qualified Geotek technicians with no requirement to return the JHAWS instrument to the manufacturer. Installation includes training of USGS personnel on instrument operation and software. The system requires standard laboratory power (US 110V) with no external chiller needed. The solution must maintain stable, repeatable measurements across the full elemental range with minimal drift during extended scanning periods and sustained performance within manufacturer tolerances for continuous operation typical of long core-logging sessions.

Technical Specifications for Geotek XRF sensor

1. Overview This document specifies the technical, performance, and integration requirements for acquiring a micro‑XRF sensor for installation on the GMEG Science Center’s Geotek MSCL‑XZ‑II Joint Hyperspectral Analyzer Work Station (JHAWS). The system must provide non‑destructive, rapid, and spatially precise geochemical analyses of soft‑sediment and hard‑rock core materials while maintaining full compatibility with the existing JHAWS platform. Requirements outlined here define the minimum acceptable capabilities for X‑ray source performance, detector characteristics, sample‑cell atmosphere, precision stage movement, software functionality, and infrastructure needs to ensure seamless integration, reliable operation, and high‑quality geochemical mapping across split‑core surfaces.
