GENERAL INFORMATION AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

1-1. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.

Refer to the Safety Summary of this technical manual for general safety precautions that are not related to any specific procedures, and therefore do not appear elsewhere in this publication. These are recommended pre-cautions that personnel must understand and apply during many phases of operation and maintenance.

1-2. INTRODUCTION.

This manual covers the functional description, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of U.S. Navy Vane-axial Fans, manufactured by New Philadelphia Fan Co. Identifying model and part numbers are listed in table 1-1. Typical fan configurations are shown in figure 1-1. Differences in characteristics of the fan models will be referred to when necessary in the text of this manual. Calculated performance curves are shown in figures 1-2 through 1-17. The actual operating points of the fans will be defined by the ventilating system resistance curve.

The standard pressure vaneaxial fans are used to distribute air as an integral part of the ship’s ventilation system.

1-3. EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION.

1-3.1 FUNCTION. The Vaneaxial Fan, hereinafter referred to as the fan, is flange mounted and supported by a sub base in either a vertical or horizontal position. Each unit consists of a vaneaxial fan type and a sub base assembly (figure 1-1). The fan is used to distribute ship ventilation air upon demand. The fan is controlled by a remote motor controller and will supply ventilation air only when needed. The fan supplies ventilation air to the ship’s ducting by the action of its electric motor driven, rotating blades.

1-3.2 DESCRIPTION. The fan is driven by a motor mounted inside the fan casing. The fan wheel is mounted directly on the motor shaft extension. The fan wheel is statically and dynamically balanced. Each fan has a required number of blades and rotates counterclockwise, viewed from the inlet (wheel) end, to draw air. The fan is controlled by a remote motor controller. Fans are supplied with either horizontal or vertical sub bases and resilient mounts. Vertical fans are provided in two configurations, discharging up (up blast) and discharged down (down blast).
