CPQC Single Target Pit

Work Required :

• Remove wood from target pit, dispose

• Install weather proof composite or plastic sub frame to hold back sand/lava rock to support pit walls

• Install/set rubber block in pit where wood was originally installed (all 4 walls)

• Rubber blocks should be placed/stacked so they are easily removed to enable rotation of blocks once they are shot

• See slide 3 for work details

Justification: Shooter Safety and cost efficiencies. The wood beams used on range 4 target pits are in constant need of repair (every two to three months). High usage, amount of ammunition fired and exposure to weather requires wood replacement and maintenance to meet training needs and safety requirements. If wood is not replaced, the metal mounting hardware becomes exposed and causes ricochet hazard. Target pit frame repair takes several days to complete, reducing available days and Soldier qualifications/training .

Cost Efficiencies and Safety: Rubber blocks are simply stacked requiring no metal hardware, eliminates ricochet hazard.

Roughly 20‐35 blocks will fill a pit, to repair you simply pull the block in cone of fire out and slide a new one in from the pits blocks. If one block can take 10k rounds and average annual CPQC per pit shot intake is 4362, then rotation would in theory last years before new blocks or maintenance are required (see next slide for calculation*). Initial investment would be well worth the future cost efficiencies and available days for unit qualifications.

From This To This

• Rubber blocks will replace pit wood

• Rubber blocks will be rotated as needed between the other blocks in the pit
