About this file
This technical document details special tools and test equipment for maintaining the Tactical Air Navigation (TACAN) Navigational Set AN/ARN-118(V) at the intermediate maintenance level. Table 2-1 lists required test equipment, including multiple TACAN test sets like AN/ARM-135(A) and ATC-1400A-2/T-1401-2, which simulate surface and air-to-air TACAN stations. Additional required equipment includes a multimeter (AN/PSM-6), Horizontal Situation Indicator (AQU-4/A), digital multimeter, frequency counter, oscilloscope, and a Night Vision Imaging System (NVG-103B) for troubleshooting white light leakage. The document provides specific instructions for powering and setting up these test sets, with a critical warning about potential electrical hazards when disconnecting power plugs.

Both TACAN Test Sets AN/ARM-135 and AN/ARM-135(A) may have voltages exceeding 30 volts present on the power plug when the Alternating Current (AC) power plug is disconnected. Discharge AC power plug to ground immediately after removal. Failure to comply could result in injury to, or death of, personnel or long term health hazards.
NOTE
• The following procedures apply to both TACAN Test Sets AN/ARM-135 and AN/ARM-135(A) as well as the ATC-1400A-2/T-1401-2. Use care in selecting only those instructions pertinent to TACAN test set being used.
• Switches must be set in sequence as listed.
• The RT-1159/A elapsed time indicator is not required to be serviceable.
a. Remove dust cover from RT-1159/A and inspect in accordance with Table 6-1. Connect RT-1159/A to test equipment as shown in Figure 5-1.
b. Set test equipment switches according to Table 5-1.
c. Set TACAN test set switches as follows:
(1) Set AN/ARM-135 AC POWER to ON.
(2) Set AN/ARM-135(A) POWER to ON.
(3) Set ATC-1400A-2/T-1401-2 POWER to ON.
(a) Connect 115 Volts (V) 60 Hertz (Hz) AC power to T-1401-2 AC IN connector.
(b) Select T-1401-2 power switch to ON (ATC-1400A-2 should also turn on).
(c) Push T-1401-2 BEARING CLEAR SWITCH to set bearing to 000.
(d) Push T-1401-2 RATE CLEAR SWITCH to set bearing rate to 0.
(e) Push ATC-1400A-2 RANGE LOAD SWITCH to set range to 155.5 nautical miles (NMI).
(f) Adjust Radio Frequency (RF) LEVEL control for 50 reading in - decibel-milliwatts (dBmw) display.
NOTE
ATC-1400A-2 will not turn on until T-1401-2 power switch is in the ON position.
d. Set 972V-1 TACAN test set MAIN PWR switch to ON.
