About this file
This document is a performance parameters table for the Next Generation Static Line Parachute (NGSL-P) system, detailing technical specifications for a new military parachute. The table provides threshold and objective performance levels across key parameters including weight range (160-400 pounds), main parachute system weight (threshold 35 pounds, objective 28 pounds), pack volume (threshold 2.0 cubic feet, objective 1.5 cubic feet), minimum exit altitude (threshold 500 feet, objective 400 feet), and other critical technical characteristics like rate of descent, canopy oscillations, opening shock, and harness design.
The performance parameters aim to improve upon the current Advanced Tactical Parachute System (ATPS) T-11 parachute, with specific goals of reducing weight, pack volume, and improving safety and performance metrics. The table indicates that while threshold levels represent minimum acceptable performance, the government strongly prefers solutions meeting the more stringent objective levels. These specifications are part of a broader Sources Sought Announcement for a potential prototype development effort spanning three phases, with the ultimate goal of developing a next-generation personnel parachute system to support mass tactical airborne infiltration operations.

Table 1: Performance Parameters
Performance Parameter Threshold Objective
All Up Weight Range
The NGSL-P shall support a weight range of 160 to 400 pounds including parachute, paratrooper and combat equipment.
T=O.
Main Parachute System Weight
The NGSL-P main parachute system (including harness) shall weigh no more than 35 pounds.
The NGSL-P main parachute system (including harness) shall weigh no more than 28 pounds.
Main Parachute System Pack Volume (packed for use)
The NGSL-P main parachute system (including harness) packed for use volume shall be no more than 2.0 cubic feet.
The NGSL-P main parachute system (including harness) packed for use volume shall be no more than 1.5 cubic feet.
Minimum Exit Altitude The NGSL-P minimum exit altitude shall be no higher than 500 feet above ground level.
The NGSL-P minimum exit altitude shall be no higher than 400 feet above ground level.
Parachute Opening Decision Time
The NGSL-P main canopy shall have an opening/decision time of 4 seconds for the paratrooper to detect the occurrence of a malfunction.
The NGSL-P main canopy shall have an opening/decision time of less than 4 seconds for the paratrooper to detect the occurrence of a malfunction.
Rate of Descent – Main Canopy
The NGSL-P main canopy impact velocity shall not exceed 18 feet per second at 400 pounds all up weight.
The NGSL-P main canopy impact velocity shall not exceed 15 feet per second at 400 pounds all up weight.
Main Canopy Oscillations
The NGSL-P main canopy shall not exceed an oscillation angle of 15 degrees once stabilized.
The NGSL-P main canopy shall not exceed an oscillation angle of 5 degrees once stabilized.
Main Canopy Opening Shock
The NGSL-P main canopy shall have a peak opening force of 10 Gs or less at up to 7,500 feet mean sea level.
The NGSL-P main canopy shall have a peak opening force of 6 Gs or less at up to 7,500 feet mean sea level.
Harness Design and Compatibility
The NGSL-P harness shall allow for fitment by a single individual and have simple process for donning/doffing to reduce rigging time and exposure upon landing; the harness shall place the weight of the parachute as closely as possible to the center of mass of the paratrooper and evenly distribute weight of parachute and combat equipment across the paratrooper’s body
The NGSL-P harness shall allow fitment over individual equipment such as body armor and radios
Reserve Parachute Compatibility
The NGSL-P main canopy and harness shall be compatible with the T-11R reserve canopy assembly.
T=O.
