About this file

This document appears to be a technical report detailing the findings and recommendations from an inspection and repair of the dredge vessel McFarland's starboard layshaft. The report covers the as-found conditions of the bearings, thrust gaps, and drag head components, as well as the dynamic testing conducted to assess the vessel's hull and alignment. Recommended adjustments were made to the thrust gaps and ratchet mechanism. The report includes measurements, photographs, and diagrams documenting the work performed.

The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation (W912BU24Q0004) issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Philadelphia District to align the starboard layshaft, bearings, and drum shafts on the McFarland dredge vessel while moored at Mooring Barge 2. No work is to be performed on the port side. The solicitation does not provide any additional details on requirements, response dates, pricing, or set-asides.

Dredge McFarland Lay Shaft Data

Job Number: USA25876

STBD Side as Found: Faro report provided to Army Corp.

Wing Gaps (Twist readings) after removing the caps.

Bearing 8 Brass dust on the bearing pedestal. Presumed to be from the bearing shims.

Bearings 1 and 6 had been removed.

The thrust washer was missing from Bearing #1 parts and a new one was fabricated and installed.

Thrust Gaps at the Gear Box hubs are out of line with the drawing call out. Below is the FWD coupling

Gap at the face this measurement varied depending on the tide and current ranging from .015” to .033”.

The AFT Face ranged from .264” to .283”. This was brought to the attention of Army Corp.

As a check we took measurements at the FWD and AFT sections of shaft to the bulk head.

The FWD call out dimension was 18 1/8” and measured 17 7/8”.

The AFT call out dimension was 24 1/8” and measured 23 ½”.

This was the as found condition.

Thrust gaps at the drag head assembly did not provide clearance between the High speed pinion gear and the drag head ratchet. The Pinion teeth were coming into radial contact with the ratchet, rolling metal at the teeth of the Ratchet. Measurements of the ratchet indicate it is deformed. It is not perpendicular to the shaft line showing over .230” variation as it rolls past the Pinion. Several ratchet teeth came into contact with the pinion. Thrust adjustments to the reel were made as well as the removal of material from the ratchet teeth at the direction of Army Corp. The cause of the deformation was not apparent, however the pawl lock on the ratchet had been repaired.

Dynamic testing of the hull was conducted at the request of Army Corp. The findings indicate the Deck and Hull move and flex considerably depending on the condition of the ship holding tank levels, other factors are tidal forces, fuel tank levels and mooring points of the vessel. It was determined that the best condition for shaft alignment was tied to the barge away from the pier with the ships tank doors open to equalize water levels inside the ship. This is where the shafting was aligned. Dynamic reports provided to Army Corp. Intermediate testing was conducted and required adjustments were made. This was followed by operational testing of the Drag Arm assembly over the side of the ship into the water. The ship returned to the pier and the job scope was closed out with the final vacuum test of the hull repair.
