About this file
This statement of work outlines requirements for a federal contract to purchase 22 female North American bison heifers. The bison must be sourced from the same herd and farm, with ages ranging from 5 to 11 months at the time of delivery in November 2023. Certificates of veterinary inspection will be required, and the bison cannot show any signs of ringworm, pink eye, or clinical illness. The bison must come from a chronic wasting disease-free herd and comply with all Iowa import regulations. Delivery will be onsite at the USDA Agricultural Research Service in Ames, Iowa. The purpose of the purchase is to support research aimed at developing improved brucellosis vaccines and understanding immunological responses related to vaccine-mediated protection in bison, elk, and cattle.

Statement of Work (SOW) Bison Heifers for Study of Brucellosis vaccination of bison, elk, and cattle
GENERAL INFORMATION
1.0 Scope of Work. The objective of the current project is to develop improved brucellosis vaccines and understand the immunologic characteristics associated with vaccine-mediated protection against Brucella abortus. This will be accomplished by monitoring immunologic responses within peripheral blood and the lymph node draining the site of vaccination at various times after inoculation. The efficacy of a mucosal vaccine alone, or in combination with the parenteral Brucella vaccine, will be evaluated in addition to the adjuvant effects of Mycobacterium bovis BCG. After transfer to a separate ACUC project protection against experimental challenge with a virulent B. abortus strain will be conducted using standard methods for evaluation of protective vaccines.
Immunologic data will be correlated to efficacy data to identify immunologic parameters that correlate with protection.
2.0 Background. Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease in which animals are the source of human infection. Brucellosis also causes economic losses due to reproductive losses in animal hosts. Addressing the disease in animals is the most economic way to benefit public health.
Vaccines are a critical tool for reducing the prevalence of brucellosis in host species. There is a need for improved vaccines to reduce prevalence of brucellosis in host species (domestic livestock and wildlife).
