STATEMENT OF WORK
Pilot-scale Wet-milling of Sorghum Grain with Mass Balance
SCOPE OF WORK.
Contractor will perform wet-milling of two batches (10-kg each batch) of #2 grain sorghum provided by the government to isolate sorghum fibers, starch, and gluten meal. Contractor will determine mass balance on the final dried products, provide a project summary, and pack and ship the final products to the customer. Contractor will allow the customer to observe the wet-milling operation.
Covered components will include:
Pilot-scale wet-milling of #2 grain sorghum Isolation/recovery of sorghum fibers, starch, and gluten meal Mass balance calculations on final dried products Shipment of final products to customer
BACKGROUND.
Developing novel value-added products will expand the market for sorghum and further boost the value of the crop. ARS scientists in Peoria, Illinois are creating such sorghum-based products by utilizing different components of the grain or plant. Wet-milling is a process that produces starch, fiber, and protein (gluten meal) that can serve as starting materials for developing and evaluating new sorghum-based products for food and non-food uses.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
Wet-mill #2 grain sorghum using pilot-scale procedure Isolate, recover and dry fiber fraction from sorghum Isolate, recover and dry gluten meal fraction from sorghum Isolate, recover and dry starch fraction from sorghum Determine yields and calculate mass balance
GOVERNMENT FURNISHED.
The government (ARS scientists or a commodity partner) will provide 100 pounds of #2 grain sorghum to the contractor.
