AHU2A EMERGENCY REPLACEMENT PROJECT

I. PURPOSE:

To obtain required commercial services to remove and replace air handling unit (AHU) 2A with new equipment meeting the requirements of this SOW, install humidification equipment within the new AHU, and to supply hydronic heating water to the new AHU and (1) steam-heated unit heater which is capable of using either steam or water as a heat source at the Claremore Indian

Hospital (CIH).

Worksite location is within the AHU2A and 2B penthouse located on the roof of the Claremore

Indian Hospital – Building 3767, and in the interstitial space above the ceiling of Support

Services - RM 301, which is located almost directly below the penthouse.

II. BACKGROUND:

AHU2A was installed in the early 2000s. This unit’s purpose is to maintain proper environmental conditions for sterile storage within Support Services – RM 301. The currently required conditions are as follows:

A. Temperature: 68-73F (Temperature range limited to occupant comfort range)

B. Relative Humidity: 30-60%

C. Pressure relationship: positive to adjacent spaces/areas and building exterior.

D. Air changes per hour (minimum): 2 outside ACH, 4 total ACH

These required conditions are based on ASHRAE Standard 170 - 2017 for Ventilation of Healthcare Facilities, ASHRAE Standard 170 - 2008 for Ventilation of Healthcare Facilities, and current hospital policy relating to this space.

During the design period of AHU2A, little concern was given to latent load, with the design mainly focusing on obtaining required sensible temperature range. This was the current engineering practice at the time, although it was recognized that latent load shall be taken into consideration shortly thereafter. The current design of AHU2A is capable of maintaining required room temperatures, but has no provision for more than just incidental dehumidification when the cooling coil happens to be at a temperature below dew point. This design makes it all but impossible to maintain proper environmental conditions for storage of sterile supplies during warm, wet outdoor air conditions. Also, during the winter months this AHU lacks any provision to provide humidification, causing the room to suffer from low humidity levels. Equipment selected for this project shall address all currently required environmental conditions, and have the capacity to maintain them under the most adverse outside air conditions, as it is never acceptable to operate under out-of-spec conditions.

Currently, AHU2A provides heat utilizing a steam-heated preheat coil. There is no provision for reheat at this time. Equipment selected for this project incorporate hydronic heating water maintained within a range of 130-180F for both preheat and reheat coils, completely eliminating the requirement for steam. It is desired to use existing hydronic heating water piping that was abandoned during the AHU replacement project in the early 2000s to supply hydronic heating water to this AHU, assuming the pipe is of proper size for required hydronic heating water flow and is still in an acceptable condition. Water is supplied via 2” steel pipe, per print.

To provide freeze protection within the AHU penthouse, the existing steam-heated unit heater is to be supplied with hydronic heating water, and existing steam supply removed back to the common Tee, and condensate piping removed back to the first natural joint under the roof.

III. REQUIREMENTS / SCOPE OF WORK (SOW):

Contractor shall provide all labor, equipment, materials, supplies, and subcontracted services to remove and replace AHU2A with equipment capable of meeting required environmental conditions as follows:

A. Temperature: 68-73F (based on occupant comfort)

B. Relative Humidity: 30-60% (based on ASHRAE 170 – 2017 requirements for sterile storage)

C. Pressure relationship: positive to adjacent spaces/areas and exterior. (.05” w.c.) based on ASHRAE 170 – 2017 requirements for areas providing clean supplies.

D. Air changes per hour (minimum): 2 outside ACH, 4 total ACH based on ASHRAE 170 – 2017 requirements for sterile storage rooms. (This requirement does not supersede outside air requirements of item G. below)

E. Dew point shall be maintained between 39.5F and 54F at all times. (Derived from the psychrometric chart and maximum dew point temperature recommended to prevent mold growth in ASHRAE standard 62.1. Dew point Range is limited below the 60F requirement based on temperature and relative humidity ranges required in the area.)

F. Equipment shall have (2) filter banks installed meeting the minimum requirements of

ASHRAE 170-1017 section 6.4 for areas used for sterile storage.
