A. Install 2 ½-inch water service lines and appurtenances in the locations, sizes and materials shown on the drawings or staked in the field.

B. Lay pipe from the meter to the home in trench free of rocks and on undisturbed soil.

1.09 TRENCH

A. Depth: Minimum 32 inches.

B. Bottom: Free from stones greater than 1-inch, large dirt clods, any frozen material.

C. Bedding: If the trench bottom is hardpan, rock, or has stones larger than 1-inch in diameter in the largest direction:

a. Over excavate 6 inches.

b. Place 6 inches of mechanically compacted imported bedding

c. Place pipe in trench.

d. Place 6 inches of mechanically compacted river sand over the pipe.

D. Backfill: restore trenches to initial grade.

E. Seed, Fertilize, and Mulch

1. Seed, fertilize, and mulch all areas disturbed by the installation of water service line.

1.10 PRESSURE AND LEAKAGE TESTING - PVC

A. Whenever practical, before backfilling is fully placed or joints fully covered, test pipe for leaks in the presence of a technical representative.

B. Furnish necessary material, equipment, and labor for testing including, but not limited to: water, pump, water storage vessel, piping, pressure gauge, valve, hydrant, and corporation stop.

1. Utilize liquid filled pressure gauges with 5psi increments or less.

C. Test duration: 2 hours minimum.

D. Testing procedures – Test in accordance with the hydrostatic Testing Method outline in

ANSI/AWWA C605.

1. Slowly fill test section with water and expel air from lines.

2. Install corporation stops at high point to facilitate removal of air, if necessary.

3. Verify that all valves in line are open if there are any.

4. Place test section under constant pressure.

5. If pressure drops more than 5 psi during test, immediately repressurize the line to the original test pressure and continue the test.

a. Record amount of water required to re-pressurize the line.

6. At end of test, repressurize the line to original test pressure.

a. Record amount of water required to re-pressurize the line.

7. Add the total amount of water required to re-pressurize the line during and at the end of the test and compare with the allowable leakage as calculated below.

a. If leakage is greater than allowable leakage, test fails.

8. Allowable leakage determination.

Q = (L*D*P^1/2)/7400

Q = Allowable Leakage (gph) L = Total Length Tested by The Standard Pipe Length D = Nominal Diameter of Pipe (inches)

P = Test Pressure (psi)

9. Repair at no cost any section of the line that fails this test.

1.11 DISINFECTION OF WATER LINES AND FITTINGS

A. Conform to AWWA C651 for disinfection. Tablet method is not allowed.

B. Obtain water at site for disinfection.

C. Flush chlorinated water in accordance with AWWA C651.

1. Waste flushed disinfection water in an environmentally safe manner. Chlorine residual of water being disposed will be neutralized by treatment of sodium bisulfate as per Appendix C of AWWA C652. The method used is subject to the approval of the Project Engineer.

D. After disinfecting and flushing but before the water line is place in service, collect and test water samples for bacteriological quality.

1. Sample in accordance with the Standard Method for Examination of Water and

Wastewater.

2. Take two consecutive tests, 24 hours apart.

3. Collect one sample from the new water line.

a. Addition samples may be required on extremely long lines.

4. Take samples to an EPA certified testing lab.

5. Permanent sampling taps may be required at the direction of the Project Engineer.

E. If initial disinfection fails to produce satisfactory bacteriological results, re-chlorinate the line, flush and take new samples until two satisfactory results are obtained.

1. Do not place service line in service until the Project Engineer has received safe bacteriological results.

F. No additional payment will be made for any equipment, material, testing or labor required to disinfect the service line. Include all costs associated with disinfection in the contract bid price for the service line.

1.12 CONNECTIONS TO EXISTING DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS

A. Depressurizing of mains will not be permitted overnight, over weekends, or on federal holidays.

5. Fertilize the area at an application rate of 100 pounds per acre.

D. Seeding:

1. Sow seed using either equipment suited to that purpose or scatter seed uniformly over area with hand seeders when the weather is sufficiently quiet to prevent seeds from blowing away.

2. Plant when soil temperature is 60° F or greater.

3. Application rate

a. 200 pounds per acre of the Kentucky 31, fescue, and rye grass.

4. Lightly rake soil to cover the seed with approximately ¼ inch of soil.

E. Mulching:

1. Place hay mulching on seeded area loose enough to allow some sunlight to penetrate and air to circulate but thick enough to shade the ground, conserve soil moisture, and prevent/reduce erosion.

2. Do not perform mulching activities during periods of excessively high winds, which would preclude the proper placing of the mulch.

3. Apply straw or hay uniformly over the disturbed area to a loose depth of ½ to 1½ inches using 2 to 2 ½ tons of mulch per acre.
