Statement of Requirement

Project: Producing pigs for research projects via farrowing

GENERAL INFORMATION

1.0 Scope of Work: This project is necessary to produce pigs of sufficient health status or with a defined immune status for certain ACUC approved experiments that have been deemed important to animal and/or human health. Obtaining pigs from vendors when health and immune status are not controlled can impact the success of the planned studies.

2.0 Background: The only way to obtain pigs for approved experiments is to buy them from outside sources or farrow them on site. Sometimes pigs purchased from outside sources are not of sufficient health status for our experiments. Farrowing on site also enables us to evaluate the effects of vaccines on maternal immunity or the impact of maternal immunity on piglet vaccination that is not possible when obtaining pigs from outside sources. Pigs must be derived from sows that are Influenza Virus and antibody negative; tested free from PRRSV, PCV2, PED, and Mycoplasma stable. Sows must come from a high health herd that has no disease.
