Appendix “B”
Argonne National Laboratory Statement of Work Design, fabrication, and delivery, of ASME U-stamp certified pressure vessels for Single-Cylinder Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) November 14, 2024
1.0 Background
This project requires a supplier to construct, as per ASME BPVC Sec. XIII, and deliver two ASME U-stamp certified pressure vessels. The pressure vessels are to be used as surge tanks for intake and exhaust gas flows for a Single-Cylinder Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) operated with either diesel or hydrogen fuel for applied research programs at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). Additional context for the intended application may be found in the supplementary document, “Supplementary - Surge Tanks for Single Cylinder Engine.docx”. As such, Pressure Vessel #1 will be referred to as the “Intake Surge Tank” and Pressure Vessel #2 will be referred to as the “Exhaust Surge Tank.” Each vessel has slightly different design requirements which are described in this document. The supplier will be expected to undertake the required engineering activities to design suitable pressure vessels and to provide technical drawings to ANL for approval prior to constructing the pressure vessels. The supplier shall then fabricate, certify, and deliver the pressure vessels within the mutually agreed upon time frame. The finished pressure vessels are to be delivered to Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), Bldg. 46, Lemont, IL.
2.0 Scope
Under the present contract, ANL expects to obtain two ASME-certified pressure vessels required for intake and exhaust surge tanks for Single-Cylinder ICE experiments, auxiliary hardware, technical drawings, and certification documents.
3.0 Objectives
3.1 Work Task 1 Design pressure vessels
· Supplier shall design two pressure vessels meeting the requirements and design specifications for each surge tank.
· Supplier shall provide technical drawings of each tank including overall dimensions, size and location of threaded ports and flanges, and configuration of attached mounting brackets.
· The ANL Technical Team shall be granted 10 business days to review and request modifications prior to design approval and fabrication of pressure vessels.
3.2 Work Task 2 Construct - as per ASME BPVC Sec. XIII - and emboss certification stamp on nameplate
· Supplier shall procure all relevant parts and raw materials (e.g., tubes, plugs, flanges etc.) to construct pressure vessels designed in Work Task 1 (Sec 3.1).
· Supplier shall procure additional flanges needed to mate tubing (at ANL) to the pressure vessels (two for each vessel) to be shipped with the completed pressure vessels.
· Supplier shall fabricate the two pressure vessels according to the approved design from Work Task 1 (Sec. 3.1) and in accordance with ASME U-Stamp standards.
· Supplier must conduct a pressure test to certify the pressure vessels for a maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP, also see “Design Pressure” in Table 4.1) of 6 barg (for the intake surge tank) and 4.5 barg (for the exhaust surge tank). The pressure test shall be performed in accordance with ASME standards.
· Supplier must conduct a Hydro (as preferred option/ alternatively pneumatic) leak test at the design pressure, certifying it as leak free.
· ANL will source and purchase ASME UV-certified pressure relief valves to be installed on the pressure vessels as described in Sec. 4.2.
· The supplier shall emboss ASME U-stamp certification on nameplate on pressure vessels meeting the ASME standard.
· After the supplier has completed the fabrication of the pressure vessels, supplier shall send notification to ANL technical representative. The ANL technical representative may visit the supplier facility for visual inspection of the tanks prior to shipment.
· The supplier will ensure that the pressure vessels are dry and free of oil before shipping.
4.0 Tasks
4.1 Work Task 1 Design pressure vessel
· Supplier shall provide technical drawings which will constitute the official fabrication documents.
· ANL will provide written approval of the technical drawings.
4.2 Work Task 2 Construct - as per ASME BPVC Sec. XIII - and emboss certification stamp on nameplate
· Construct two pressure vessels adhering to the general specifications listed below, along with each pressure vessel’s particular specifications. Note that the configuration of the two pressure vessel ports are mirror images of each other.
