About this file
This document is a Statement of Work for providing valves and associated components to outfit a cold box for liquid and gaseous nitrogen flow at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.
The key requirements include providing an inlet control valve, inlet manual valve, vapor control valve, small vapor valve, and associated seals and bellows. The valves must meet specifications for flow rates and pressures during fill, stable operation with and without accelerator load, and warmup. Source selection will be based on lowest price, technical acceptability, and best lead time. The solicitation is open to U.S. domestic end item sources, and the resulting purchase order shall be performed in accordance with SLAC's fixed price commercial terms and conditions. Offerors must be registered in the System for Award Management (SAM) to be eligible for award.

Statement of Work
Valves for Liquid Nitrogen and Gaseous Nitrogen Flow
We are outfitting a cold box for liquid and gaseous nitrogen flow. A schematic is shown in the figure below. We would like to procure the following items:
1. Inlet Control Valve
2. Inlet manual valve
3. Vapor Control Valve
4. Small vapor valve
5. Associated seals and bellows for all valves
The valves are shown circled in red in the schematic. The relevant parameters and information for the specification of the valves is shown after the schematic.
All pressures absolute unless noted.
Cryostat Parameters:
● Volume 1.1 m^3
● Inner radius 0.37 m
● Length 2.5 m
● Fill level 0.37 m
● Fill volume 550 liters
LN Source:
● Initially 1-3 180 liter portable dewars
● Operating pressure = 22 psig = ~2.5 bar = 250 kPa
Or
● Vertical dewar ~10000 liters
● Operating Pressure ~6 bar = 600kPa
Supply Line
● Length ~5 m
● ID 12.5 mm refrigeration tubing
● Insulation type Foam, closed cell
Vent Line (as of now)
● Length ~5 until reaching a much larger stack
● 25 mm diameter
1. Cooldown from warm to ~80K:
a. Limit inlet flow on following:
i. Cryostat pressure < 1.8 bar
ii. LN height < 5 cm
iii. Limit dT/dt on accelerator structures and quadrupole to acceptable value to be determined, perhaps 20K/hour down to 100 K.
b. Estimated LN need is 180 liters.
2. Fill to normal operating level
a. Fill in 100 minutes with flow of 0.08 l/sec
b. Flow limits:
i. Cryostat operating pressure < 1.8 bar
ii. Maximum Allowable Working Pressure(MAWP) - 2.5 bar.
3. Stable operation with no accelerator load
a. Regulate LN height (h) with inlet valve
b. Regulate pressure (P) (1.8 bar) with vent valves
4. Stable operation with 5 kW accelerator load
a. Mass flow 0.025 kg/sec
b. Volume flow vapor 5 l/sec
c. Control h and P as above
d. Vent line pressure drop 1.5 kPa
5. Stable operation at 10 kW accelerator load1
a. Mass flow 0.05 kg/sec
b. Volume flow vapor 10 l/sec
c. Control h and P as above
d. Vent line pressure drop 6.2 kPa
6. Warmup (aided by 1 kW heater at bottom of cryostat)
a. Mass flow 0.005 kg/sec
b. Volume flow vapor 1 liter/sec
c. Vent line pressure drop 60 Pa
d. Modulate heater as h drops to 1 cm, stop when cryostat T begins to rise
1 This is the maximum required flow for this configuration. 0.1 kg/sec would be advantageous.
