About this file
This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the U.S. Geological Survey requiring a regional or global class research vessel capable of launching ROV Jason to support seafloor geodetic benchmark operations offshore northern California in the Cascadia subduction zone at approximately 3,100 meters water depth. The operations are scheduled for calendar year 2027, potentially spanning the FY26/FY27 budget year, and will serve as an add-on to National Science Foundation cruises led by Scripps Institute of Oceanography. The vessel must preferably be the R/V Revelle or a similar U.S. research vessel equipped with heavy-lift overboard handling systems capable of launching ROV Jason and maintain dynamic positioning stability for deep-water operations exceeding 3,000 meters.
The vessel must meet specific operational requirements including: a dedicated Jason control van staffed with pilot, engineer, navigator, and science stations; a data center compatible with ROV Jason for real-time video, sonar, and sensor data; and stable dynamic positioning capability. Contractors must provide the vessel's name and detailed description as part of their operational specifications. Contract award determination will consider experience with similar scientific work, workspace accommodations, equipment deployment methodology, and equipment operation capability on comparable platforms, with cost alone not being the sole evaluation factor. No response deadline, pricing terms, or specific award date is provided in this SOW excerpt.

Statement of Work
The U.S. Geological Survey has a requirement for a regional or global class research vessel capable of launching ROV Jason operated by the National Deep Submergence Facility (NDSF) or similar (TBD) to support the re-occupation and re-battery of an existing seafloor geodetic benchmark at ~3100 meters water depth offshore northern California and the Cascadia subduction zone. The planned operations are as an add-on to currently funded National Science Foundation (NSF) cruises led by partner Scripps Institute of Oceanography (SIO). The operations are scheduled to occur in calendar year 2027 (potentially spanning the FY26/FY27 budget year), with specific sailing schedules to be determined.
Vessel Operational Specifications to be provided to USGS
1. Name and detailed description of the vessel to be used under this contract
Vessel Requirements
1. The vessel must be the R/V Revelle or a similar regional or global class U.S. research vessel capable of launching ROV Jason
2. The vessel must operate a heavy-lift overboard handling system (crane/A-frame/winch) capable of launching ROV Jason
3. The vessel must have a dedicated Jason control van with pilot, engineer, navigator, and science stations
4. The vessel must have a data center for real-time video, sonar, and sensor data compatible with ROV Jason
5. The vessel must be stable, with dynamic positioning, capable of operating ROV Jason in water depth >3,000 meters.
The contract award will not be determined solely by cost alone. Experience in this type of scientific work, workspace accommodations, method of deployment of equipment, and ability operate equipment on similar platforms will be considered.
