Office of Contracting and Logistics Management Revised 05 Mar 2015
Statement of Requirements Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler
Department of Oceanography Naval Postgraduate School
1.0 Background/Introduction:
The Oceanography Department (OC) at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) is in need of an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) which is used for measuring ocean currents, waves, and turbulence.
This particular ADCP model allows for concurrent measurements with a sampling frequency of up to 16 Hz. It will be used by researchers and students of the OC department in student thesis research of turbulent kinetic energy, nearshore wave processes, nearshore current processes, and surf zone dynamics.
2.0 Minimal Technical Requirements/Salient Characteristics:
The OC department requires an ADCP that meets the following requirements:
• User selectable sampling frequency of 1 to 16Hz if using 4 beams.
• User selectable sampling frequency of 1 to 8Hz if using 5 beams.
• Transducer acoustic frequency of 1 MHz
• User selectable vertical resolution of current profiles of 2 cm to 2 m with a maximum range of 30m
• 5-beam head configuration (4 slanted at 25o, 1 vertical)
• Velocity measurement resolution of 0.1 cm/s
• Up to 128 sampling cells.
• Concurrent measurement capabilities allowing for the measurement of current, wave, and turbulence at the same time.
• Wave height measurement error not to exceed 1% of measured value.
• Wave direction error not to exceed 2o.
• Capability of the center beam to be used as an echosounder.
• Solid state system for measuring heading, pitch and roll with 2o heading accuracy and 0.5o pitch and roll accuracy (static).
• Temperature sensor with accuracy/resolution of 0.1oC/0.01oC
• Internal data recording capability of 64 GB.
• Real time clock with accuracy of +/- 1 min/year
• Internal battery with capability to use external; battery pack as well.
• Input power of 12-48 VDC
• Weight of system not to exceed 3.5 kg in air
• External diameter of main housing must be 117-118mm to be compatible with existing mounting/deployment systems.
• Height of system not to exceed 225 mm to be compatible with existing mounting/deployment hardware.
Office of Contracting and Logistics Management Revised 05 Mar 2015
• Data input/outputs require a Nortek format consistent with existing processing and analysis software developed by the Oceanography Department at the Naval Postgraduate School.
