SIMULATED MEDICAL DRUGS

STATEMENT OF NEED

Date: 8 Sept 2020

1. INTRODUCTION: These simulated medications will be utilized in the Inpatient Pharmacy

Curriculum.

2. BACKGROUND: The past five years, the METC Pharmacy Program and DHA Logistics Deputy

Chief Mr. Robert Sense have been researching a solution to comply with the FDA drug shortage initiative. Currently the Pharmacy Program utilizes actual “Real” medications that would be dispensed to patients in a (Live) hospital situation. Nationally these medications are in extreme shortage throughout the United States. The purchase and utilization of “Mock” or “Fake” medications supports this initiative and the benefit is overwhelming. Implications if request is denied. If this request is denied and status quo is continued, METC fails to support a national initiative to save patient lives across the United States and denial creates a potential training deficiency.

3. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/SPECIFICATIONS/SALIENT

CHARACTERISTICS:

Products will be in the quantities required in attachment: Items will consist of ampules, vials with powder, and vials with solution. All medications must be made of inert non-pharmaceutical power and sterile water. Simulated medication requested by the METC Pharmacy program must be made to specific requirements, which include custom labeling, specific colored ampoules both amber and clear and in different sizes 1, 5, and 10 ml. Must be able to make vials with inert non-reactive powders with specific size vial openings; 13mm and 20mm and flip-off sealed caps. Must be able to make training vials and ampoules that match our PHAR 111 approved curriculum formulary. Dosage form, sizing and labeling is critical to our training scenarios.
