About this file
This is a Sources Sought/Notice of Intent document for NIST's Fabrication Technology Office seeking repair, maintenance, and training services for Hurco VMX64 and VMX24 CNC machines located at the Gaithersburg, Maryland campus. NIST intends to issue a sole source award to Hurco Companies Inc. (UEI: NJ7KYK6V3PL9) unless alternate qualified sources are identified through this market research notice. The procurement falls under NAICS code 811310 (Commercial and Industrial Machinery and Equipment Repair and Maintenance) and PSC code J034.
The required services include comprehensive repair and upgrade work on both machines. For the VMX-64: replacement of the Y-axis ballscrew and bearings, installation of new way cover gaskets, installation of an I/O-IF board (P/N 416 0607 903) to activate the probing system, probe calibration, thorough coolant system cleaning, and replacement of filters in the Barnes chip conveyor. For the VMX-24: diagnosis and repair of bearing issues, removal and replacement of the spindle assembly, and machine calibration. Interested sources must respond by April 27, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time with company information, capability details, authorized reseller status, small business classification, relevant contract experience, and suggestions for improving the procurement structure to encourage small business participation. Responses should be submitted to the NIST point of contact via email in Microsoft Word, Excel, or PDF format. NIST clarifies that this notice is not a request for quotation and no award will result from responses submitted.

NIST Document Type: Sources Sought/Notice of Intent Procurement Identifier: NIST-AMD-F-FTO-SSN-26-0004 Title: Hurco Service Repair and Upgrade
PSC: J034 Maintenance, Repair, and Rebuilding of Equipment- Metalworking Machinery NAISC: 811310 Commercial and Industrial Machinery and Equipment (except Automotive and Electronic) Repair and Maintenance
BACKGROUND:
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is seeking information from sources that may be capable of providing repair, maintenance, and training on Hurco VMX64 and VMX24 computer numerical control (CNC) machines. If no alternate sources are identified, the Government intends to issue a Sole Source Award to Hurco Companies Inc. (One Technology Way, Indianapolis, IN 46268 USA) UEI NJ7KYK6V3PL9, under the authority of FAR 12.102. The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code for this acquisition is 811310.
The Fabrication Technology Office (FTO) at The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) provides engineering, fabrication, and technical services to support the creation of unique measurement instruments and scientific apparatus for NIST scientists and research staff. The FTO delivers mission-critical engineering and manufacturing expertise to produce specialized parts and subassemblies for one-of-a-kind instruments. A team of skilled engineers, instrument makers, and technicians offers single job/prototype work, short production runs, mechanical engineering design, optics and glass fabrication, and technical solutions for electromechanical devices.
The Hurco VMX64 and VMX24 CNC machines are located at the Gaithersburg, MD campus. Both machines are critical to NIST’s precision manufacturing research and development activities. This procurement is a standalone project to restore full functionality and enhance the machines’ capabilities with an upgraded probing system on the VMX64 and repaired spindle on the VMX24. To meet mission requirements, the FTO seeks to procure P/N 416 0607 903 I/O-IF board and associated services to activate the probing system on the Hurco VMX-64, as well as parts and services for the repair of the Hurco VMX-24, including spindle replacement. The probing system on the VMX-64 enhances workflow efficiency by enabling precise probing functionality, improving measurement accuracy, and reducing setup time for machining operations. From a safety perspective, the tool touch ensures accurate positioning, minimizes human error, and enhances operator safety by reducing manual intervention in the probing process. For the VMX-24, the spindle repair addresses bearing issues to restore full operational condition, ensuring precision and reliability for NIST’s manufacturing research.
NIST conducted market research and only the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) Hurco Companies Inc can provide the services. The results of that market research revealed that only Hurco Companies Inc. UEI NJ7KYK6V3PL9, appears to be capable of meeting NIST’s requirements.
No other source can provide the same repair maintenance and training of the Progress VP and CUT1000 EDM other than GF Machining Solutions.
Requirement: The contractor shall provide all OEM parts and labor to repair the HURCO VMX-64 and HURCO VMX-24. The work includes replacing the Y-axis ballscrew and bearings on the VMX64, installing new way cover gaskets, installing an I/O-IF board (P/N 416 0607 903) to activate the probing system, calibrating the probes, thoroughly cleaning the coolant system, and replacing coolant filters in the Barnes chip conveyor. For the VMX24, the work includes diagnosing bearing issues, removing the old spindle, installing a new spindle assembly, and calibrating the machine.
Required Tasks:
· -Replace the Y-axis ballscrew and bearings on the VMX-64.
· · Install new way cover gaskets on the VMX-64.
· · Install the I/O-IF board and wire the probing system on the VMX-64.
· · Calibrate probes and check operation on the VMX-64.
· · Thoroughly clean the coolant system on the VMX-64.
· · Install new filters in the Barnes chip conveyor on the VMX-64.
· · Provide a coolant filter for the chip conveyor on the VMX-64.
· · Allocate additional labor time for deep cleaning the coolant system on the VMX-64.
· · Diagnose bearing issues, remove the old spindle, install a new spindle assembly, and calibrate the VMX-24.
